Education of optical spectroscopy of atoms and molecules

Abstract:

This thesis is concerned with the spectral composition of light emitted by discharge tubes suitable for education of atom and molecule physics is presented in this thesis. The introductury part starts with describing of the light sources suitable for spectroscopic measurements, their classification, principles and properties. Then, the options of demonstration of spectrum are described. The most extensive part of the thesis is devoted to spectra of atoms and molecules available in Geissler and other types of discharge tubes. Spectrum of hydrogen is qualitatively compared due to it’s accessibility in three fillings of Geissler tubes. Quantum defect of selected levels of sodium is evaluated from the spectral lines’ wavenumbers of low pressure sodium lamp. The system division of terms into two partial systems: singlet and triplet is observed with helium and mercury. The shift of the most intensive transitions in the visible part of spectra of rare gases due to increase of the main quantum number of valence shell is observed. Vibrational quantum numbers of the identified bands are assigned to the heads of nitrogen and carbon monoxide molecule spectra. Spectra of halogens are qualitatively discussed. In last chapter, a new student laboratory problem of sodium concentration measurement by absorption method is suggested. The results of observation shows that spectra of discharge tubes can be used for demonstration of atomic and molecular structure and for solving simple and complex spectroscopic problems. In this sense, discharge tubes are useful educational tool.

Abstract:

V této diplomové práci se zabýváme spektrálním složením záření výbojek vhodných do výuky atomové a molekulové spektroskopie. V úvodní části popisujeme zdroje světla vhodné pro spektroskopické měření, jejich rozdělení, principy fungování a charakteristiky. Dále uvádíme možnosti, jak spektrum demonstračně pozorovat. Nejrozsáhlejší část práce se věnuje spektrům atomů a molekul dostupných v Geisslerových a v jiných typech výbojek. Kvalitativně porovnáváme spektrum vodíku dostupného v třech náplních Geisslerových výbojek. Z vlnočtů spektrálních čar nízkotlaké sodíkové výbojky stanovujeme kvantový defekt vybraných hladin sodíku. U helia a rtuti pozorujeme, jak se jejich systém termů dělí na dva částečné systémy: singletové a tripletové. Identifikováním přechodů v spektru vzácných plynů sledujeme změnu rozložení nejintenzívnějších přechodů ve viditelné části spektra s rostoucím hlavním kvantovým číslem jejich valenční hladiny. V spektru molekul dusíku a oxidu uhelnatého přiřazujeme vibrační kvantová čísla hlavám identifikovaných pásů spektra. Kvalitativně rozebíráme spektra halogenů. V poslední kapitole navrhujeme úlohu na analýzu koncentrace sodíku absorpční metodou. Z výsledků pozorování vyplývá, že spektra výbojek je možno využít pro objasnění struktury atomů či molekul i pro řešení jednodušších i složitějších spektroskopických úloh. Z tohto pohledu jsou výbojky užitečná výuková pomůcka.
