A Comparative Study of English and Czech Idioms

Abstract:

Předkládaná diplomová práce poskytuje analýzu anglických a českých idiomů, které obsahují lexém "head" nebo "hlava". Idiomy jsou předmětem porovnání z pohledu tří lingvistických kritérií - sémantického, formálního a lexikálního. Analýza se snaží porovnat do jaké míry se idiomy navzájem shodují s přihlédnutím k těmto již zmíněným kritériím, a následně vyvozuje závěry týkající se chování obou jazyků, pokud jde o užití idiomatických výrazů, které obsahují daný lexém. Práce dále nabízí výsledky, které byly získány na základě dotazování rodilé mluvčí, která zaznamenávala svoji obeznámenost či neobeznámenost s anglickými idiomy použitými v této práci. Analýza samotná odhalila relativní konzistentnost, co se týče počtu idiomů v jednotlivých sémantických kategoriích napříč prací. Množství idiomů v obou jazycích se liší jen mírně. Tento výsledek může být chápán jako sklon obou jazyků užívat idiomy, které obsahují daný lexém, do stejné míry, a může také poukazovat na to, že hlavě, jakožto orgánu, mluvčí obou jazyků připisují stejnou důležitost.

Abstract:

The present thesis provides an analysis of English and Czech idioms which contain the body part lexeme "head" or "hlava". The idioms are subject to comparison on three linguistic levels – semantic, formal, and lexical. The analysis aims at comparing the extent to which the idioms correspond on the three levels stated, and consequently draws conclusions about the behaviour of the two languages regarding the usage of idiomatic expressions employing the particular body part lexeme. Furthermore, the thesis provides an insight into a native speaker’s (un)familiarity with the English idiomatic expressions gathered. The analysis itself has revealed a relative consistency throughout the whole thesis as far as the results regarding the particular semantic categories are concerned. The numbers of idioms in both languages vary only slightly which points to the similar tendency of both languages to employ idiomatic expressions containing the lexeme head/hlava and to the shared perception of this organ as central to our lives.
