Greek Mosaic

Abstract:

Ve své práci se věnuji tématu řecké podlahové mozaiky. V prvé řadě shrnuji tuto uměleckou techniku jako takovou, materiály používané pro její tvorbu v antice, jejich tvůrce, o nichž toho mnoho nevíme a principy vzorů, které byly tuto technikou nejčastěji vytvářeny. Další kapitoly práce pojednávají o vývoji řecké mozaiky od jejích počátků v 8. století př. Kr. například v maloasijském Gordiu, přes oblázkové mozaiky zastoupené ve vyšší míře v Olynthu a Pelle a příklady přechodné techniky například v sicilské Morgantině až po propracovaná díla vytvořené tesserovou technikou na Délu, v Pergamonu, či Pompejích.

Abstract:

The topic of this Bachelor thesis is the Greek floor mosaic. My objective was to comprehensively summarize the main technical features, like the used materials, the principles of design and development of Greek mosaic, especially during the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic period, with regard to the main sites and examples. Firstly, there are examples of natural pebbles in Olynthos and Pella, some evidence of transitional technique in Sicilian Morgantina and then, in the 3rd century B. C., mosaic created of artificially shaped stones of various kinds, colors and quality (tessellated mosaic) in Delos, Pergamon or Pompeii.
