The influence of prison sentence upon the wives and partners of the incarcerated

Abstract:

Tato práce si dala za cíl zjistit, jaké dopady má výkon trestu odnětí svobody na partnerky uvězněného v českém prostředí. Výzkum je explorační, jelikož tato oblast je v ČR téměř neprobádaná. Pro zjištění dopadů na partnerky uvězněného byl využit vlastní dotazník s uzavřenými a otevřenými otázkami, které vycházely z dostupné zahraniční literatury, a byl adresován 30 partnerkám uvězněných. Výsledky ukázaly, že uvěznění mělo na partnerky vězňů především psychické, emocionální a finanční negativní dopady. Také byly zjištěny sociální dopady – zejména úbytek v sociální aktivitě a částečně zažívané stigma. Pozitivní stránkou uvěznění byl pozitivní dopad na partnerský vztah, který však mohl být ovlivněn výběrem vzorku. Výsledky studie dokazují, že partnerky jsou také trestány uvězněním svých partnerů. Bylo by vhodné navázat na tuto studii a provést v ČR další výzkumy na toto téma.

Abstract:

The aim of this work was to evaluate the impact of a prison sentence on partners of imprisoned individuals in the Czech context. The nature of this research is exploratory, since the field is virtually unexplored in the Czech Republic. In order to determine the impact on the partners, a questionnaire with closed and open questions, based on available foreign literature, was utilized and addressed to 30 women partners of prisoners. The results showed that the imprisonment had primarily negative mental, emotional and financial effects. Social impacts were discovered as well – most notably, decrease in social activity and partially experienced stigma. A positive aspect of the imprisonment was its impact on the partner relationship, which may have, however, been influenced by the sample. The results of the thesis prove that the women partners of prisoners are subject of punishment by the prison sentence as well. It is recommended to follow the thesis by performing more research on this topic in the Czech Republic.
