Financial, Comercial a Artistic Aspects of Jan Svěrák's Work

Abstract:

Práce analyzuje tvorbu celovečerních filmů úspěšného českého režiséra Jana Svěráka v období od roku 1990 až po současnost, a to z hlediska třech navzájem se ovlivňujících aspektů – uměleckého, komerčního a souvisejícího finančního. Její součástí je kritické zhodnocení pramenů, stručná biografie tvůrce, seznam spolutvůrců a výčet ocenění. Práce definuje postavení komerce v současnosti a její vztah k uměleckým ambicím díla. Středem zájmu je také analýza návštěvnosti kin, která je měřítkem úspěšnosti filmů. Dále přibližuje režisérovy názory, předpoklady a zdroje. V kapitolách u konkrétních snímků je uvedena řada relevantních informací, které pomáhají utvářet celkový pohled na téma a přiblížit, jak Svěrák postupuje při tvorbě snímku. Stranou zájmu nezůstává ani režisérovo postavení v současné české kinematografii a společenské přesahy jeho filmů. Rozhoduje umělecká kvalita o komerčním úspěchu? Do jaké míry omezuje komerce umělecké aspekty tvorby? Od těchto obecných otázek přejdeme ke konkrétním. Jak se Svěrák vyrovnal s komercí? V čem vycházel vstříc divákovi? Jak si získal svou pozici? Mimo jiné i na zodpovězení těchto otázek je má práce zaměřena.

Abstract:

The present thesis analyzes creation of the feature films by Jan Svěrák, the successful Czech director, in the period from 1990 till present, concentrating on three aspects mutually influencing each other – artistic, commercial and the related financial aspects. It consists of critical assessment of sources, the director’s short biography, list of his collaborators, specification of awards and prizes. The thesis defines the commercial considerations and their influence on the artistic ambitions of the work and, in this connection, focuses its attention on the analysis of cinema attendance rates, a standard criterion of success. Furthermore, the work dissects the director’s opinions, assumptions and sources. The chapters on the individual films include information that help understand the overall view of the topic and the way the director proceeds in creating the film. The thesis also addresses Jan Svěrák’s position in the current Czech cinematography. From the general questions on whether artistic quality decides about commercial success and to what extent the commercial aspects limit the artistic ones the thesis proceeds to answer specific questions how Jan Svěrák dealt with the commercial considerations, in what ways and to what extent he strived to accommodate audience’s expectations and why he has achieved the position he now occupies in the Czech film industry.
