Hubert Pilčík and the Borderland in Šumava during Communism

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je rozdělena do pěti kapitol. První kapitola se věnuje fenoménu Železné opony, její podobě, fungování a i samotnému zániku. Je zde vyprávění o autoru Železné opony Hlavačkovi a je zde také uvedeno kolik lidí zemřelo na následky uzavření hranice, při pokusu o její překonání. Druhá kapitola se zaměřuje na ochránce hranic, tedy Pohraniční stráž, jak probíhaly hlídky, jak byli vojáci vybíráni, i že se nebáli střílet po lidech, kteří se snažili uprchnout na západ. Následující kapitola se naopak věnuje těm, kteří se snažili pomáhat lidem s útěkem. kapitola vysvětluje, kdo byli kurýři, převaděči nebo agenti-chodci. Jsou zde popsány životy několika nejvýznamnějších převaděčů, kteří se vyskytovali na Šumavě a šlo tedy o Krále Šumavy - Josef Hasil, Kilian Nowotny, Jaroslav Kaska a Jan Mašek. Ve čtvrté kapitole jsou popsány jedny z nejzajímavějších přechodů hranice, kdy lidé museli využít svého umu a kreativity, aby se dostali za svobodou. Pátá kapitola se věnuje samotnému případu Huberta Pilčíka, který zavraždil minimálně pět lidí, i když jim slíbil, že jim pomůže dostat se za hranice. Kapitola detailně popisuje celý případ všemi dostupnými zdroji, i když samotný vyšetřovací spis se nedochoval. Je zde také zmíněna akce Kámen do, které byl Pilčík údajně zapojen, i když se to nikdy nepotvrdilo. Významnou částí kapitoly je také vyšetřování jeho sebevraždy ve věznici v Plzni. Poslední kapitola pak následně ukazuje jak se Pilčíkem, ale i Železnou oponou inspirovali spisovatelé a filmaři.

Abstract:

The thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is devoted to the phenomenon of the Iron Curtain, its form, functioning and its demise. There is a story about the author of the Iron Curtain, Hlavacek, and it is also mentioned how many people died as a result of the closing of the border, while trying to cross it. The second chapter focuses on the defenders of the border, the Border Guard, how patrols were conducted, how soldiers were selected, and that they were not afraid to shoot at people trying to escape to the west. The following chapter, on the other hand, focuses on those who tried to help people escape.The chapter explains who were couriers, smugglers or agent-walkers. It describes the lives of some of the most important smugglers who were present in Šumava and were therefore the Kings of Šumava - Josef Hasil, Kilian Nowotny, Jaroslav Kaska and Jan Mašek. The fourth chapter describes some of the most interesting border crossings, when people had to use their wit and creativity to get to freedom. The fifth chapter focuses on the case of Hubert Pilcik himself, who murdered at least five people even though he promised to help them get across the border. The chapter details the entire case with all available sources, although the investigation file itself has not survived. There is also mention of Operation Stone, in which Pilcik was allegedly involved, although this has never been confirmed. The investigation into his suicide in Pilsen Prison is also an important part of the chapter. The last chapter then shows how writers and filmmakers have been inspired by Pilčík, but also by the Iron Curtain.
