Unwanted adverse effects of hormonal contraception and awareness of them among comprehensive secondary school students

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá hormonální antikoncepcí z pohledu jejich negativních účinků. Vymezuje termín hormonální antikoncepce jako nejužívanější reverzibilní metodu zabraňující otěhotnění. Popisuje její historický vývoj od starověkých kultur až do současnosti a mechanismus působících hormonů. Rozděluje hormonální antikoncepci podle dvou kritérií. Typu obsaženého hormonu: kombinovaná (estrogen - gestagenní) a gestagenní a podle formy užití: tabletky, náplasti, vaginální kroužek, nitroděložní tělísko a podkožní implantát. Převážná část práce je tvořena analýzou nežádoucích účinků, mezi které patří tromboembolické nemoci, genová mutace faktoru V Leiden, jaterní poškození, infarkt myokardu, ale i nezávažné vedlejší účinky jako váhový přírůstek nebo pokles libida. Součástí práce je také dotazníkové šetření o informovanosti studentek gymnázií v této oblasti. Z výsledků vyplývá, že pouze 50 (29,41 %) dívek z celkového počtu 170 respondentek má dosud zkušenosti s užíváním hormonální antikoncepce. Pouze 8 z 50 uživatelek mělo povědomí o nadpoloviční většině nežádoucích účinků, které byly v dotazníku zkoumány.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis deals with a hormonal contraception in terms of their negative effects. It defines the hormonal contraception as the most widely used reversible method of preventing pregnancy. It describes its historical development from the ancient civilizations up to the present as well as the mechanism of acting hormones. The hormonal contraception is divided according to two criteria. The first one is the type of hormone it contains: combined (estrogen-progestogen) and progestogen. The second criterion is the form of the use of contraception: pills, patches, vaginal ring, intrauterine device and a subcutaneous implant. The major part of this work consists of the analysis of adverse side effects, such as thromboembolic disease, factor V Leiden genetic mutation, liver damage, myocardial infarction, as well as mild side effects such as weight gain or decreased libido. The thesis also includes a survey about grammar schools' female students' awareness in this regard. The results show that only 50 (29,41 %) girls out of a total of 170 respondents have been using hormonal contraception. Only 8 out of 50 users were aware of the absolute majority of adverse side effects included in the survey questionnaire.
