Followership and it’s relation to selected leadership concepts

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá tématem followershipu ve vztahu k vybraným koncepcím leadershipu. Jejím cílem je na základě teoretické analýzy prozkoumat vztahy mezi mírou naplnění role followera, vnímanou efektivitou lídra a jejich vzájemnými interakcemi v kontextu vybraných koncepcí leadershipu. Teoretická část práce shrnuje pojem followershipu a shrnuje poznatky v rámci tohoto fenoménu. Empirická část uvádí výzkumné cíle a výsledky dvou pilotních studií. Hlavní studie byla provedena v 10 organizacích z oblasti IT a bankovního sektoru. Získaná data byla analyzována prostřednictvím faktorové, regresní a korelační analýzy, analýzou hlavních komponent a modelů strukturního modelování. Výsledky analýzy ukázaly důležitost síly vztahu, který mezi sebou lídři a followeři tvoří. Dále byla podpořena odlišná preference vnímaných charakteristik lídrů v závislosti na míře naplnění role followera. Naproti tomu v rámci výzkumného vzorku nebyla podpořena důležitost vlivu vnímaných charakteristik lídra na vztah míry naplnění role followera a vnímané efektivity lídra. Zároveň byl podpořen pozitivní vztah míry naplnění role followera a vnímané efektivity lídra, nicméně síla tohoto vztahu vyšla jako slabá. Diskuze obsahuje podrobnou interpretaci výsledků práce a na ně navazující praktická doporučení pro organizace, pedagogiku a další výzkum.

Abstract:

The dissertation deals with the topic of followership and its relation to selected leadership concepts. Based on theoretical analysis, it aims to explore the relationships between the degree of follower’s role fulfillment, perceived leader effectiveness and their mutual interactions in the context of selected leadership concepts. The theoretical part of the thesis reviews the concept of followership and summarizes the findings within this phenomenon. The empirical part presents the research objectives and results of two pilot studies. The main study was conducted in 10 organizations in the IT and banking sectors. The data collected was analysed through factor, regression and correlation analyses, structural equation modelling and principal components analyses. The results of the analysis showed the importance of the strength of the relationship that leaders and followers form with each other. Furthermore, the different preferences of perceived leader’s characteristics were supported depending on the degree of fulfillment of the follower role. On the other hand, the importance of the influence of leader’s perceived characteristics on the relationship between the degree of follower role fulfillment and leader’s perceived effectiveness was not supported within the research sample. At the same time, the positive relationship between the degree of follower role fulfillment and perceived leader effectiveness was supported; however, the strength of this relationship emerged as weak. The discussion includes a detailed interpretation of the results of the study and related practical recommendations for organizations, pedagogy, and further research.
