Critic of Secularization Thesis

Abstract:

Tato práce podává kritickou reflexi tzv. sekularizační teze. Zejména pak jejich východisek, hlavních charakteristik a dopadů. V první části jsou na příkladu několika konkrétních teorií zpracovaných předními světovými sociology, kteří se v 50. a v 60. letech, tedy v době jejího rozkvětu, řadili mezi její hlavní zastánce, ukázána hlavní metodologická východiska celé koncepce. Největší důraz je kladen na dílo P. L. Bergera, které je významné jak svými prosekularizačními myšlenkami, tak jejich následnou kritikou. Právě změna Bergerova pohledu na platnost teorie sekularizace slouží jako propojení první a druhé části práce, která se zaměřuje na hlavní příčiny kritiky teorie sekularizace. Stěžejní pro tuto část jsou soudobé společenské jevy jako desekularizace, deprivatizace a náboženský nacionalismus, které spolu s přehledem vývoje náboženství v několika posledních desetiletích slouží jako základní body její kritiky.

Abstract:

This work provides a critical reflection of the secularization thesis focusing on its bases, main characteristics and impacts. The first part analyzes the major methodological issues on the example of four specific theories formulated by some of world's leading sociologists who were the main proponents of the thesis in the 50th and 70th. The biggest emphasis is put on the work of P.L. Berger, which is significant for its conformity with the secularization theses, but also for its subsequent criticism. Berger's opinion change on the validity of the secularization thesis serves as a link of the first and second part of this work, which is focused on the main causes of the critic of the secularization thesis. The main points of this part are contemporary social phenomena as desecularization, deprivatization and religious nationalism, which serve together with an overview of the development of religion in the past few decades as the most important elements of the critic.
