Specification and Generalization in Student Translations

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce bylo zjistit, jak tři skupiny překladatelů z řad studentů s rozdílnými zkušenostmi s překládáním užívají specifikaci a generalizaci. Specifikaci a generalizaci lze považovat za jedny z projevů explicitace, resp. implicitace, proto studie vycházela z poznatků výzkumu v oblasti posunů explicitnosti. Jedním z dílčích témat empirického výzkumu explicitace je souvislost mezi jejím výskytem a překladatelovou zkušeností. Prvním cílem studie bylo zjistit, zda se v tomto ohledu mezi skupinami studentů projeví určitá tendence. Druhým cílem bylo porovnat, jak efektivně jednotlivé skupiny překladatelů tyto posuny využívají. V praktické části byla provedena analýza padesáti čtyř překladů studentů bakalářského studia anglické filologie a studentů začínajících a končících navazující magisterský studijní obor překladatelství na Masarykově univerzitě. Hledisko uplatněné při analýze bylo sémantické. Každý výskyt specifikace a generalizace byl na základě svého účinku na cílový text zařazen do tří základních kategorií. První dvě kategorie, posuny zvyšující efektivitu výrazu a umocňující zvláštní efekty, byly převzaté z koncepce klasifikace lexikálních prostředků stylu, jejímž autorem je Eugene Nida. Do klasifikace byla přidána kategorie posunů na hranici zkreslení zamýšleného významu. Navrhované rozdělení specifikace a generalizace dle účinků na cílový text umožňuje vytvořit detailnější přehled o tom, jak posuny změnily vlastnosti cílového textu. Získané poznatky ohledně toho, zda a ve kterých oblastech studenti (ne)používají posuny efektivně, mohou být následně využity při praktické výuce překladu.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis was to investigate how three groups of student translators with differing amount of translation experience use specification and generalization. Specification and generalization can be subsumed under shifts of explicitness; therefore, research in explicitation was used as a theoretical background against which the study was carried out. An important question of empirical research in explicitation is how/whether explicitation correlates with translation experience. The aim of the study was twofold: firstly, to explore whether some tendency can be traced among the translator groups in terms of the occurrence of the two shifts and translation experience; secondly, to observe how efficiently the student translators used the two shifts. I carried out a manual analysis of fifty-four translations produced by BA students of English philology and students at the beginning and at the end of their MA translation programme at Masaryk University. The approach adopted to analyse the individual shifts was a semantic one; according to their effects on the target text, the shifts were classified into three categories. The first two of them, efficiency increasing shifts and shifts enhancing special effects, were based on Nida's concept of the classification of lexical features of style. I added a third category, shifts resulting in distortion of the intended meaning. The proposed classification of shifts enables to create a more detailed picture on how/whether the shifts influenced the properties of the target text. The findings concerning the areas in which the shifts were (not) used efficiently can be subsequently used in translation training.
