Imagery in Blues Lyrics as a Countercultural Expression in Contemporary Music

Abstract:

Účelem této diplomové práce je analyzovat texty v bluesové hudbě a prozkoumat prostředky, kterými je jejich význam nějakým způsobem znejasněný, parodovaný, nebo jinak sporný. Práce bere v úvahu koncept Afroamerické ústní tradice zvané Signifying, která je spolu s lingvistickým konceptem kooperačního principu jako prostředku při studiu pravidel konverzace a implikační teorie, která zkoumá v textech narážky, hlavním zdrojem ironie a rafinovaného podvodu v studovaných textech písní. Tenhle fenomén je studován individuálně na vybraných výňatcích z bluesových textů, které obsahují kontroverzní potenciál. Analýza poskytuje hlubší pohled do podstaty způsobu, jakým lingvistické principy pomáhají afroamerickým bluesovým muzikantům obejít většinou nezdvořilé a obscénní implikace a také vysvětluje, co je spouštěčem výskytu této ironie. První část této práce pojednává o historických a kulturních podmínkách pro vývoj žánru bluesové hudby. Klíčovými koncepcemi teoretické sekce jsou definice bluesového žánru a jeho charakteristik, a hudby jako prostředku komunikace. Závěr této sekce s kulturním pozadím pro vývoj žánru připravuje základ pro skutečnou analýzu hudebních textů, protože předznamenává argument, že poselstvo přenášené přes hudbu obsahuje podobné charakteristiky jako konverzace mezi dvěma účastníci – kódování a dekódování. Druhá sekce práce se věnuje konkrétní analýze lingvistických principů na příkladech z hudebních textů a definuje je jako klíčovou součást ve vývoji undergroundových významů písní. Poukazuje na to, že Signifying jako nástroj rétoriky zahrnuje manipulaci s lingvistickými principy a tak má za následek výskyt ironických nebo obskurních významů, které jsou docíleny přes obscénní obrazy.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to analyse lyrics in blues music and investigate the tools by which their meaning is obscured, parodied, or made controversial. The study takes into consideration a concept of African-American oral tradition – Signifying, which is along with linguistic concepts of cooperative principle, as a means to study rules of conversation, and implication theory, which examines insinuations in the texts, the main source of irony and trickery in the studied lyrics. This phenomenon is examined individually on selected excerpts from the blues lyrics which carry a potential of controversy. The analysis provides an insight into the ways linguistic principles help African-American blues musicians to circumvent mostly impolite and obscene images, and explains what the trigger for occurrence of this irony is. The first part of the thesis provides historical and cultural conditions for the development of the genre of blues music. The key concepts of the theoretical section are the definition of the blues genre and its characteristics, and music as a tool for communication. The end of this section with cultural background provides a ground for the actual analysis of the lyrics since it constitutes an argument that message transferred through music contains similar characteristics as a conversation between two participants does – coding and decoding. The second section of the thesis administers the analysis of linguistic principles on the examples from lyrics and defines these as a crucial element in the development of countercultural meanings of the songs. It shows that Signifying includes the linguistic manipulation and results in ironic or obscure meanings achieved through obscene images.
