View of Exploration for and Evaluation of Mineral Resources in Financial Statements of Oil Companies according to IFRS

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je představit specifika účetnictví ropného průmyslu se zaměřením na uznávání průzkumných aktiv a použité metody, které jsou následně předmětem výzkumu. Teoretická část poskytuje přehled o ropném průmyslu, regulaci odvětví dle IFRS včetně IFRS 6 a položkách aktiv, rezerv, zásob vytěžené a nevytěžené ropy a výnosů. V další části jsou analyzovány zmíněné metody Successful Efforts Method a Full Cost Method. Praktická část zahrnuje empirický výzkum zaměřující se na metody průzkumných uznávání aktiv. Výzkum ukázal, že Successful Efforts Method je v IFRS nejpoužívanější. Transparentnost a srovnatelnost účetnictví odvětví však zůstává nižší, a to z důvodu přetrvávající aplikace rozdílných metod účetními jednotkami a nejednotného postupu v rámci Successful Efforts Method.

Abstract:

The aim of the diploma thesis is to introduce the specifics of oil industry accounting with the focus on recognition of exploration assets and methods used, which are then subject to research. The theoretical part provides an overview of the oil industry, regulation of the industry according to IFRS including IFRS 6 and assets, provisions, oil inventories, oil reserves, and revenues. In the next part, the mentioned methods of exploration assets recognition Successful Efforts Method and Full Cost Method are analysed. The practical part includes empirical research focusing on asset recognition methods. The research has shown that the Successful Efforts Method is the most widely used in IFRS. However, the accounting transparency and comparability of the industry remain lower due to continued use of different methods and an inconsistent approach within the Successful Efforts Method.
