Pro šíření antibiotické rezistence má důležitý význam především horizontální přenos genů rezistence na plazmidech. V současné době jsou u patogenních bakterií stále častěji nalézány vysokomolekulární plazmidy nesoucí geny rezistence k antibiotikům či jiným inhibitorům růstu. Gene transfer mediated by plasmids plays an important role in the spread of antibiotic resistance genes. Nowadays, high molecular weight plasmids carrying resistance genes to antibiotics and growth inhibitors are commonly found in pathogenic bacteria.
