Digital formula and dermatoglyphic radioulnar contrasts: similarities and differences of putative markers of prenatal steroid action in the hand morphology

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá vztahem mezi 2D:4D poměrem délky prstů a radioulnárními kontrasty kvantitativních hodnot (RC) dermatoglyfických vzorů na prstech ruky. Zjišťuje, zda a jakým způsobem souvisí míra projevu obou možných markerů prenatálního působení steroidních hormonů. Materiálem bylo 127 dospělých a dětí, u kterých byly z délek druhého a čtvrtého prstu vypočítány 2D:4D poměry a z dermatoglyfického hodnocení jejich otisků prstů byly stanoveny radioulnární kontrasty, tj. rozdíly mezi všemi radiálními a ulnárními kvantitativními hodnotami vzorů na prstech ruky. Pomocí Spearmanova koeficientu pořadové korelace byly zjištěny statisticky významné korelace mezi 2D:4D poměrem a některými z radioulnárních kontrastů. U dospělých mužů bylo zaznamenáno několik statisticky významných korelací, většinou začínající od RC palce. Přidáním skupiny chlapci ke skupině dospělí muži způsobilo, že u výsledné skupiny muži nebyla prokázána žádná statisticky významná korelace. Skupina muži zahrnuje jedince různého věku a je možné, že z důvodu mírné změny 2D:4D poměru v průběhu života, může věk osob při tomto srovnání hrát roli. U žen byly zaznamenány nejvyšší koeficienty na ulnární straně ruky. Zjistila jsem, že existuje určitá souvislost mezi 2D:4D poměrem a radioulnárními kontrasty. Pro jejich potvrzení, případně podrobnější interpretaci je však zapotřebí dalšího výzkumu.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on relationship between 2D:4D ratio and radioulnar contrasts of dermatoglyphic features on fingers and evaluates whether and how the level of manifestation of these two possible putative markers of prenatal steroid hormone action is related. The hypothesis was studied on set of 127 adults and children, in whom the 2D:4D ratios were calculated from the lengths of the second and fourth finger and the radioulnar contrasts were made from the dermatoglyphic evaluation of their fingerprints. Radioulnar contrasts were made as differences between all radial and ulnar quantitative values of patterns on fingers of the hand. Using Spearman rank correlation coefficient, statistically significant correlations were found between the 2D:4D ratio and some of the radioulnar contrasts. Several statistically significant correlations have been observed in adult males, mostly starting from RC of the thumb. By adding a group of boys to a group of adult males, the resulting group of males showed no statistically significant correlation. The male group includes individuals of different ages and it is possible that due to a slight change in the 2D:4D ratio over the course of life, the age of the individuals may play a role in this comparison. In women the highest correlation coefficients were observed on ulnar side of the hand. I have found some form of connection between 2D:4D ratio and radioulnar contrasts. However further studies are needed to confirm them or to interpret them in more detail.
