Suicide in Czech daily newspapers – analysis of cases of Jan Masaryk, Jan Palach and Karel Svoboda

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá fenoménem sebevraždy v souvislosti s mediální agendou. Cílem práce je ověřit hypotézu, že komunistický tisk sice téma sebevraždy Jana Palacha nastolil, ale věnoval se mu pouze v minimální míře a výradně za účelem udržet status quo. Dále je zkoumána otázka, jakým způsobem byla tato sebevražda ve vybraných denících zpravodajsky zachycena. Snažíme se také analyzovat, zdali a jak jednotlivé agendy – tedy veřejná a politická agenda -ovlivnily daný způsob mediální prezentace jmenované události. Práce je rozdělena do dvou částí. V první části jsou představeny teoretické modely a teorie, o které se tato práce opírá. Dále jsou popsány metody, které byly při analýze použity. Rozbor textů probíhal pomocí sémiotické analýzy, přičemž byl uplatněn komunikačně pragmatický přístup. V druhé části práce je zkoumán z pohledu mediální agendy případ sebevraždy Jana Palacha. Vybrané české deníky jsou sledovány po dobu delší než jeden měsíc od události. Sebevražda Jana Palacha byla sledována v období od 17. ledna do 17. března 1969 v těchto denících: Rudé právo, Práce, Pravda. Při rozboru zvoleného příkladu sebevraždy jsme provedli kvantitativní analýzu, přičemž jsme se zaměřili na umístění článků v daném deníku. Dále byla zohledněna přítomnost fotografií. Nastolování tématu v tištěných médiích u Palacha určila zčásti veřejná agenda a hlavně politická agenda, masmediální kritéria – zpravodajské hodnoty – sehrály pouze minimální roli.

Abstract:

Diploma thesis deals with the phenomenon of suicide in the context of agenda-setting. The aim of this diploma thesis is to verify hypothesis that communistic press introduced the theme of suicide of Jan Palach but it followed this theme only in minimum measure and exclusively with intention to preserve status quo. Furthermore the thesis examines the question in which the particular case of suicide was captured in news of chosen journals. The case of Jan Palach was examined. We also try to trap if and how each individual agenda – public and political agenda - influence the given way of media presentation of the mentioned suicide. The thesis is divided into two parts. In the first part the theoretical models and theories are introduced which this thesis is based on. Then the methods are described which were used during the analysis. The text analysis proceeded with help of semiotic analysis whereas communicative-pragmatical approach was applied. In the second part of the thesis the case of suicide of Jan Palach is investigated from the point of agenda-setting. Selected czech daily newspapers are studied in the course of three month. Suicide of Jan Palach was followed between 17th January and 17th March 1969 in the following dailies: Rudé právo, Práce, Pravda. During the analysis of the chosen case of suicide we carried out quantitative analysis meanwhile we concentrated on location of news in the newspaper. Photos were considered as well. Agenda-setting in press is determined by the other agendas: in case of Jan Palach there was partly influence of public agenda, but mainly of political agenda, which means that the masmedial criteria – news values – enacted only minimal role.
