Abstract:

Diplomová práce zkoumá pragmatické funkce vycpávkového slova I mean v akademické mluvené americké angličtině. Dva typy mluvených situací, studentské prezentace a seminář, byly vybrány z databáze textů akademické angličtiny Michiganské univerzity a analyzovány v souvislosti s četností výskytu vycpávkového slova I mean. Dále se autorka pokouší identifikovat možné pragmatické funkce I mean v obou mluvených situacích. V závěru práce jsou porovnány oba analyzované texty a popsány jejich rozdíly.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis investigates pragmatic functions of the verbal filler I mean in academic spoken American English. Two types of speech events, namely student presentations and seminars, were chosen from the Michigan Corpus of Academic English and analysed in terms of the frequency of I mean. Further, the author attempts to identify possible pragmatic functions of I mean in the two speech event situations. The findings of both speech event types are compared and the reasons for their differences are described.
