Gender in Ethnography: Margaret Mead versus Derek Freeman

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá genderovými aspekty terénního výzkumu. Je rozdělena na dvě základní části. První z nich předkládá epistemologická východiska vybraného tématu. Nejprve otevírá otázku zkoumání etnografa jakožto subjektu prováděného výzkumu. Poté přechází k genderu a předkládá doposud publikované poznatky o genderu v etnografii. Diskutuje přitom téma vstupu do terénu, postavení ve výzkumné komunitě a postoj k sexu v terénní práci. Druhá část poskytuje srovnání výzkumu prováděného ženou s výzkumem muže. K tomuto účelu využívá kauzu, která probíhala mezi dvěma antropology, Margaret Meadovou a Derekem Freemanem. Práce se nejprve zabývá tím, co kauze předcházelo, a poté čtenáři představuje její průběh. Dále nabízí pohled na její dílčí roviny. Následně diskutuje genderové aspekty této kauzy. Soustřeďuje se na postavení Margaret Meadové a Dereka Freemana ve zkoumané komunitě a nahlíží na ně z hlediska standpoint theory. Poté zpracovává problém genderu a vědění a vztahuje jej na danou kauzu. Následně hovoří o západním původu obou etnografů a také pohlíží na gender ze širší symbolické roviny. Závěr práce je věnovaný shrnutí kontroverze Meadová versus Freeman a zhodnocení problematiky genderu v etnografii.

Abstract:

This Bachelor Thesis deals with gender aspects of field research. The Thesis itself is divided into two basic parts. First of them presents epistemological bases of a chosen topic. At the beginning it is directed toward questions of ethnographer like a subject of research. Then it transfers to gender and presents yet published findings about gender in ethnography. At the same time it discuss topic of entering the field, position within the research community and attitude to sex in fieldwork. The second part provides a comparison of research conducted by a woman with research conducted by a man. For this purpose is used the controversy which took place between two anthropologists, Margaret Mead and Derek Freeman. At first the Thesis describes the controversy itself. After that it offers a partial view of its levels. Subsequently it discusses gender aspects of the controversy. It focuses on the position of Margaret Mead and Derek Freeman in researched community, involving standpoint theory. After that it processes the problem of gender and knowledge and applies it to the cause. Then it speaks about western origin of both ethnographers and also looks at gender from a wider symbolic level. Conclusion of work is devoted to a summary of controversy Mead versus Freeman and evaluation of gender issues in ethnography.
