Transformations of Sherlock Holmes Character in Selected Artworks

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce je zaměřena na postavu Sherlocka Holmese a její pojetí v literárním kánonu (1891–1927) jejího stvořitele, sira Arthura Conana Doyla, a porovnáná ji s klasickou televizní adaptací (1984–1994) v hlavní roli s Jeremym Brettem, s moderním pojetím společnosti BBC (2010– 2017) s Benedictem Cumberbatchem a „moderně-klasickou“ verzí režiséra Guye Ritchieho (2009 a 2011). Zabývá se také díly, které popisují Holmesovo mládí a stáří. Prvním z nich je film Pyramida hrůzy (1985), který může být vnímán jako jeden z předchůdců Harryho Pottera, a knihou a filmem Mr. Holmes (2015). Tento příběh naopak popisuje detektivovo stáří. Práce zkoumá, jak jednotlivá pojetí pracují s kánonem a pravidly, která nastavil Doyle, nebo jakým způsobem se od něj naopak odklánějí a čím jsou tyto proměny motivovány. Zaměřuje se také na proměnlivou úlohu nejdlůležitějších vedlejších postav.

Abstract:

This bachelor degree thesis is focused on the Sherlock Holmes character and his depiction in the canonical works from his creator, sir Arthur Conan Doyle and compares this portrayl with his rendition in classic TV adaptaion (1984–1994) with Jeremy Brett in the leading role, further with BBC's modern version (2010– 2017), starring Benedict Cumberbatch and with director Guy Ritchie's "modern-classic“ version (2009, 2011). This work further deals with fiction concerning Sherlock Holmes's youth and his old age. Young Sherlock is depicted in the movie Young Sherlock Holmes (1985), which can be perceived as one of an inspiration sources of Harry Potter, whereas the agigng detective appears in the book and the movie Mr, Holmes (2015). This work examines how these interpretations of the characters work with Doyle's rules and the Holmes canon, in which ways the differ from it and what are the reasons for these changes. The thesis further focuses on the varying role of the most important supporting characters.
