Entrepreneurship and migration: the case of the Ukrainian minority in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Tématem této diplomové práce je podnikání a migrace s důrazem na podnikání menšin, které se stalo obzvlášť aktuálním v souvislosti s válkou na Ukrajině od roku 2022. Hlavním cílem práce je vyhodnotit situaci v oblasti podnikání cizinců v ČR s přihlédnutím ke změnám, které byly způsobeny vlnou ukrajinské migrace v minulém roce. Teoretická část práce si klade za úkol zmapovat základní informace spojené s podnikáním, migrací a konkrétně s podnikáním ukrajinské menšiny. Zde jsou také nastíněny teoretické koncepty týkající se motivů a překážek při podnikání cizinců v hostitelské zemi. V analytické části je provedena analýza podnikání menšin v ČR v období 2012-2022, a to metodou analýzy časových řad. Dále je také realizován vlastní výzkum s účastí ukrajinských migrantů, kteří prchali před válkou do České republiky. Z výzkumu vyplynulo, že se potýkají s řadou komplikací, jako jazyková bariéra, nedostatečná znalost českých reálií, vysoký počet konkurentů, problémy s řešením administrativních otázek a obavy z malého počtu zákazníků. Pro vyřešení těchto problémů bylo uprchlíkům doporučeno několik aktivit. Na konci práce byla také provedena diskuze na zvolené téma.

Abstract:

The topic of this thesis is entrepreneurship and migration with an emphasis on minority entrepreneurship, which has become particularly topical in the context of the war in Ukraine since 2022. The main objective of the thesis is to evaluate the situation in the field of business of foreigners in the Czech Republic, considering the changes that were caused by the wave of Ukrainian migration in the past year. The theoretical part of the thesis aims to map the basic information related to business, migration and specifically the business of the Ukrainian minority. Here, theoretical concepts concerning the motives and obstacles to the business of foreigners in the host country are also outlined. In the analytical part, the analysis of minority business in the Czech Republic in the period 2012-2022 is carried out using the time series analysis method. In addition, our own research is also being carried out with the participation of Ukrainian migrants who fled to the Czech Republic before the war. The research showed that they face a number of complications, such as language barrier, lack of knowledge of Czech realities, a high number of competitors, problems with solving administrative issues and concerns about a small number of customers. To solve these problems, refugees were recommended several activities. At the end of the work, a discussion was also conducted on the chosen topic.
