Effects of soil properties on bioaccumulation of persistent organic pollutants in earthworms

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce shrnuje současné poznatky o působení půdních vlastností na biodostupnost persistentních organických polutantů (persistent organic pollutants, POPs) v půdách. V teoretické části je hlavní důraz kladen na půdní organickou hmotu (soil organic matter, SOM), která je klíčová pro biodostupnost v půdách a tedy i pro bioakumulaci v organismech. Bakalářská práce se věnuje i vlivu struktury SOM, metodám jejího stanovení a interakcemi mezi SOM a POPs. Tyto interakce mohou snížit biodostupnost POPs a tím také snížit jejich bioakumulaci v organismech. V praktické části práce byl sledován vliv krmení a množství půdy použité na expozici organismů na bioakumulaci v žížale Eisenia fetida. Bioakumulace v žížalách byla vybrána, jako přímá metoda měření. Z výsledků vyplývá, že přídavek krmení významně snižuje množství akumulovaných látek. Jednoznačný vliv množství půdy použité na expozici organismů prokázán nebyl.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis summarizes current knowledge about effects of soil properties on bioavailability of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in soils. In the theoretical part, the main attention was given to soil organic matter (SOM) which is the key factor influencing biovailability in soils and bioaccumulation in organisms. The bachelor thesis addresses the factor of SOM structure, methods for SOM assessment and interactions between SOM and POPs. These interactions can reduce bioavailability of POPs to organisms and decrease bioaccumulation significantly. In the practical part of the thesis, the effects of feeding and soil amount used for exposure of organisms on bioaccumulation of POPs in earthworm E. fetida were investigated. Bioaccumulation in earthworms Eisenia fetida was chosen as the direct method for bioavailability assessment and was used in the practical part of the thesis. According to the results, is it is clear that feeding significantly decrease the amount of accumulated compounds. The explicit relationship was not approved between bioaccumulation and the amount of soil used for the exposure.
