The Engaged Buddhism of Thich Nhat Hanh

Abstract:

Tématem této bakalářské práce je vznik a vývoj vietnamského angažovaného buddhismu a v tomto procesu zejména pak podíl zen buddhistického mnicha Thich Nhat Hanha. Vietnamské buddhistické hnutí se ve válečném období pokusilo vzít obnovu společnosti i politického systému do svých rukou za současného hledání zdrojů ke svému sociálně a politicky angažovanému jednání uvnitř vlastní náboženské tradice. Výzkum metod a buddhistických principů, které byly buddhistickým hnutím využívány je pak nedílnou součástí práce. Buddhismus se dnes spolu s jeho postupnou implantací na západ stává součástí procesu individualizace náboženství, současně však, v pojetí angažovaných buddhistů, nástrojem k mírovému soužití lidstva. Thich Nhat Hanh je dnes na západě považován za druhého nejznámějšího angažovaného buddhistu, proto se zde zaměřím na okolnosti, které vedly k utváření jeho teorie a principy, ze kterých odvozoval svou praxi.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the origin and formation of Vietnamese engaged buddhism and mainly with a participation of zen buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh in this process. Vietnamese buddhist movement in the time of war attempted to undertake the reconcilation of the society and of the political system with the view of seeking the sources to its socialy and politicaly engaged actions within its own religious tradition. The research of methods and buddhist principles which was used by the buddhist movement represent an integral part of the thesis. Buddhism is together with its gradual implantation to west becoming a part of the process of indiviualisation of religion but in engaged buddhists conception by the same time a vehicle for attainment the peaceful society. Thich Nhat Hanh is considered to be the second well-known engaged buddhist in the west, that´s why I focus on the conditions which led to forming his theory and principles from which he derived his practice.
