Experiences and self-concept of women athletes in combat sports: Interpretative phenomenological analysis

Abstract:

This thesis investigates the experiences and self-concept of women athletes in combat sports. It uses the qualitative method of interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). The sample consists of 3 women in young adulthood who engage in combat sports at a competitive level. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews, which were transcribed verbatim and analyzed. Four superordinate themes emerged from the analysis: Transformation of the fighter's self-image, Combat sport develops personality and improves quality of life, The ambivalent role of combat sport in fighter’s perception of her own body, and The role of a fighter and the role of a woman in contrast. In the beginning of the results section, the combat sports environment is described in the participants' words. In the theme Transformation of the fighter's self image, the initial insecurity and subsequent improvement of the self-image of participants in the role of a fighter were described. The theme Combat sport develops personality and improves the quality of life focuses on the perceived positive effects of combat sport on the personality of participants, but also on their life satisfaction and their identity. In the theme Ambivalent role of combat sport in fighter’s perception of her own body, the negative and positive effects of combat sports on the satisfaction of participants with their bodies are described. The theme The role of a fighter and the role of a woman in contrast discusses the contrast of stereotypes associated with femininity and combat sports. This topic also describes the participants' approach to gender stereotypes and their integration of the identity of a fighter and the identity of a woman. Social Identity Theory proved to be a relevant theoretical framework in this study.

Abstract:

Táto bakalárska práca kvalitatívne skúma skúsenosti a sebepojetí žien, ktoré sa venujú bojovým športom. Používa metódu interpretatívnej fenomenologickej analýzy (IPA). Vzorkou sú 3 ženy vo veku mladej dospelosti, ktoré sa venujú bojovým športom na súťažnej úrovni. Dáta vznikali pomocou pološtruktúrovaných rozhovorov, ktoré boli doslovne prepísané a analyzované. Z analýzy vyplynuli štyri hlavné témy: Vývoj sebaobrazu bojovníčky, Bojový šport rozvíja osobnosť a skvalitňuje život, Ambivalentná rola bojového športu vo vnímaní vlastného tela a Rola bojovníčky a ženy v kontraste. V úvode výsledkovej časti je slovami participantiek popísané prostredie bojových športov. V téme Vývoj sebaobrazu bojovníčky boli popísané úvodné obavy a následné zlepšovanie sebaobrazu participantiek v roli bojovníčky. Téma Bojový šport rozvíja osobnosť a skvalitňuje život sa zameriava na vnímané pozitívne vplyvy bojového športu jednak na osobnosť participantiek, ale aj na ich životnú spokojnosť a vnímanie vlastnej identity. V téme Ambivalentná rola bojového športu vo vnímaní vlastného tela sú popísané negatívne aj pozitívne vplyvy bojového športu na spokojnosť participantiek so svojim telom. Téma Rola bojovníčky a ženy v kontraste pojednáva o kontraste stereotypov spájaných so ženskosťou a s bojovým športom. V tejto téme je popísaný aj prístup participantiek ku genderovým stereotypom a ich integrácia identity bojovníčky a identity ženy. Relevantným teoretickým rámcom pre túto prácu sa ukázala byť Teória sociálnej identity.
