Strategic culture and its impact on the outcome of the Six-Day War: the case of Israel and Egypt

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce zkoumá výsledek Šestidenní války, přičemž analýza probíhá skrze koncept strategické kultury. Strategická kultura je vědní disciplína zkoumající kulturní vlivy na strategické rozhodování států. V rámci výzkumu jsou sledovány vybrané události a jejich dopad na formování epistemické komunity, která následně tvoří strategickou kulturu. Vybranými událostmi jsou vznik Státu Izrael a IDF, červnová revoluce v Egyptě a Sinajská válka. Práce dochází k závěru, že strategická kultura sehrála klíčovou roli v průběhu Šestidenní války a měla důsledky i na pozdější vztahy mezi Izraelem a Egyptem.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis examines the outcome of the Six Day War, with the analysis being conducted through the concept of strategic culture. Strategic culture is a discipline that examines cultural influences on the strategic decision making of states. The research examines selected events and their impact on the formation of the epistemic community that subsequently constitutes strategic culture. The selected events are the establishment of the State of Israel and the IDF, the June Revolution in Egypt, and the Sinai War. The thesis concludes that strategic culture played a key role during the Six Day War and had implications for later relations between Israel and Egypt.
