The first fossil material of Jurassic theropod dinosaur from the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Teropodí fosilní materiál z území České republiky byl až dosud omezen pouze na zástupce korunního kladu Aves. Nyní byl však v paleontologických sbírkách Ústavu geologických věd PřF MU identifikován archosauří zub, jehož morfologie odpovídá zubům karnivorních forem teropodních dinosaurů. Materiál pochází ze svrchnojurských karbonátů ze Švédských šancí (Brno-Slatina) a byl objeven pravděpodobně ještě před druhou světovou válkou. Vzorek s největší pravděpodobností představuje laterální zub z anteriorní poloviny pravé maxily nebo levé zubní kosti. Byly změřeny parametry zubu a získaná data byla následně srovnávána s detailními anatomickými studiemi taxonů a údaji k statistickým a kladistickým analýzám. Na základě srovnání teropodích zubů je pravděpodobné, že moravský teropod byl bazálním zástupcem kladu Tetanurae, který byl v Evropě hojně zastoupen zejména během střední až pozdní jury.

Abstract:

The fossil theropods from the Czech Republic has so far been restricted to the members of the crown clade Aves. However, it was recently discovered that an archosaur tooth deposited in the collections of the Institute of Geological Sciences (Faculty of Science, Masaryk University) is similar to the teeth of carnivorous theropod dinosaurs. The material comes from the Upper Jurassic carbonate rocks of Švédské šance (Brno-Slatina), where it was probably discovered before World War II. The specimen most likely represents a lateral tooth from the anterior part of the right maxilla or the left dentary. The tooth measurements were taken and the obtained data were compared to detailed anatomical studies of taxa and to data for statistical and cladistic analyses. On the basis of the comparisons it is suggested, that the Moravian theropod was a basal member of the clade Tetanurae, whose members were abundantly represented in Europe especially during the Middle to Late Jurassic.
