The Presence of Homosexuality in Three French Contemporary Detective Novels

Abstract:

This Bachelor’s Diploma Thesis deals with the theme of homosexuality in three contemporary francophone detective novels: Je suis un assassin ((Laurent de Graeve), Mort d’une drag-queen (Hervé Claude) a La mort vous remercie d’avoir choisi sa compagnie (Philippe Cassand). All the three novels offer its readers an interesting mixture of a literary genre with the homosexual background, both considered to be marginal by the modern society. The main aim of this thesis is to analyze the artistic value of such literature: Are they literary works of quality or rather examples of pulp fiction? The three novels are analyzed so as to decide whether they meet the criteria of the detective genre and whether the aspects of this genre are not put aside to the benefit of the theme of homosexuality. To prove some of the above mentioned hypotheses, it is necessary to analyze how the authors deal with the theme. The thesis studies how the authors approach the usage of the clichés connected with the homosexual world and if they respect the characteristics of the detective genre or rather tend to neglect it.

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá zpracováním tématu homosexuality ve třech současných frankofonních detektivních románech: Je suis un assassin (Laurent de Graeve), Mort d’une drag-queen (Hervé Claude) a La mort vous remercie d’avoir choisi sa compagnie (Philippe Cassand). Všechny tři knihy nabízejí zajímavé spojení literárního žánru, jenž je obecně posuzován spíše jako marginální, a prostředí homosexuálů, kteří jsou také dnešní společností někdy odsouváni na její okraj. V práci jsme se proto pokusili zjistit, zda toto spojení může přinést plnohodnotná literární díla, či zda se jedná o literaturu zábavnou a méně kvalitní, zaměřující se hlavně na problematiku homosexuality. Dále jsme se snažili posoudit, jestli tyto tři detektivní romány správně reprezentují daný žánr, nebo je detektivní stránka potlačena a v popředí je zejména tematika homosexuální. Pro potvrzení některé z těchto hypotéz, bylo nutné analyzovat, jak autoři toto specifické téma uchopují nejen za použití klišé spojených s homosexuály, ale současně za respektování nebo naopak zanedbávání pravidel a charakteristických prvků detektivního žánru.
