The Fourth World Conference on Women and its Impact on Feminism in China

Abstract:

The Fourth World Conference on Women was held in Beijing from the fourth to the fifteenth of September 1995 under the auspices of the United Nations Organization. The Bachelor thesis aims at examining the impact of the conference on the development of feminism in China, at presenting the outcomes of the conference and at comparing the presentation of the conference in western and Chinese media. In addition to the main conference in Beijing, the thesis also focuses on the NGO Forum in Huairou held at the same time. The aim of this thesis consists in summarizing the Fourth World Conference on Women and in pointing out at its positive and negative impact on feminism in China. As the conference was international, the themes of this thesis were examined from the viewpoint of transnational feminism. In order to answer the research questions, diachronic compilation of conference outputs, speeches and professional articles as well as the comparison of Chinese and foreign web pages informing about the events were used. The research uncovered how the Communist Party of China attempted to create a gap between the conference guests and the uninformed Chinese people. The Chinese government launched a campaign named as Program for Development of Chinese Women, involving all of the main themes of the conference. The campaign was later followed by two other campaigns. Furthermore, the thesis mentions the significance of the conference in relation to the political and the perception of a woman in the society. Finally, the thesis discusses the growth of NGOs after 1995. The Fourth World Conference on Women was one of the significant milestones of China’s women’s history.

Abstract:

Od štvrtého do pätnásteho septembra v roku 1995 sa v Pekingu, pod záštitou Organizácie Spojených národov, konala Štvrtá svetová ženská konferencia. Táto bakalárska práca skúma, ako konferencia ovplyvnila vývoj feminizmu v Číne, aký bol výsledok konferencie a porovnáva, ako bola interpretovaná v médiách na západe a v Číne. Okrem hlavnej konferencie v Pekingu sa práca zameriava aj na konferenciu mimovládnych organizácii v Huairou, ktorá sa konala v tom istom čase. Cieľom tejto práce je celkovo sumarizovať Štvrtú svetovú ženskú konferenciu a poukázať na jej pozitívny, ale aj negatívny vplyv na feminizmus v Číne. Vzhľadom k tomu, že sa jedná o medzinárodnú konferenciu, práca túto tému skúma z pohľadu transnacionálneho feminizmu. Z metodologického hľadiska práca pre zodpovedanie výskumných otázok využíva diachrónnu kompiláciu výstupov konferencie, prejavov a odborných článkov, taktiež komparáciu čínskych a zahraničných webových stránok, ktoré informovali o tejto udalosti. V rámci výskumu bolo zistené, ako sa Komunistická strana Číny snažila mylnými informáciami vytvoriť bariéru medzi účastníkmi zo západu a čínskym obyvateľstvom. Čínska vláda spustila kampaň Program pre rozvoj žien Číny, ktorá zahŕňala hlavné myšlienky z konferencie. Na túto kampaň neskôr nadväzovali ďalšie dve kampane. Ďalej práca poukazuje na to, ako významne konferencia ovplyvnila politickú participáciu v Číne a vnímanie ženy v spoločnosti. Nakoniec práca rozoberá nárast mimovládnych organizácii po roku 1995. Štvrtá svetová ženská konferencia bola jedným z významných míľnikov histórie ženského hnutia v Číne.
