Cognitive complexity in patients with personality disorders

Abstract:

V této práci jsou zkoumány systémy osobních konstruktů psychiatrických pacientů s poruchou osobnosti v porovnání s lidmi, kteří v minulosti nebyli psychiatricky léčeni. Informace o struktuře a obsahu konstrukčních systémů zkoumaných osob byly získány technikou repertoárových mřížek. Výsledky naznačují nižší úroveň kognitivní komplexity u pacientů, jejichž myšlení o lidech je méně diferencované, tj. rozlišují mezi lidmi na základě méně významových dimenzí. Zkoumané skupiny se vzájemně neliší v míře kognitivní integrace, nicméně validita ukazatelů integrace je diskutována. Podle výsledků obsahové analýzy pacienti popisují morální vlastnosti svých blízkých a známých častěji než účastníci v porovnávací skupině. Tito používají více neutrálních osobnostních charakteristik než pacienti, což může vypovídat o jejich méně kritickém postoji k lidem. Pacienti se také častěji uchylovali ke krajním bodům na škálách konstruktů a projevovali větší tendenci k extrémnímu hodnocení. Výsledky jsou diskutovány v souvislosti s předešlými zjištěními v oblasti sociální kognice u poruch osobnosti.

Abstract:

In this study personal construct systems of psychiatric inpatients with personality disorders are explored in comparison with non-patients. The repertory grid technique was used to collect information about structure and content of the participants' construct systems. The results suggest that the clinical participants are less cognitively complex in terms of cognitive differentiation, i.e. they employ less dimensions of thinking about their acquaintances and significant others. There was no difference in cognitive integration, but the validity of indices of integration is discussed. According to content analysis the patients describe moral qualities more often than the non-patients. These use neutral personality descriptors in greater extent than the patients and hence seem to be less judgemental about others. The patients also used the endpoints of rating scales more often than the non-patients and exhibited more extreme response style. The results are discussed in regards to previous findings about social cognition in personality disorders.
