Comparison of sanction regimes directed to African countries

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se věnuje srovnání sankčních režimů namířených na státy Afriky ze strany OSN a EU. Teoretický úvod je zaměřen na multilaterální sankce jako nástroj zahraniční politiky mezinárodních organizací. V další části je představena dosavadní sankční praxe obou organizací, včetně jejich vzájemných vztahů. Rovněž jsou zmíněny nejčastější motivy, jež OSN i EU považují za legitimní důvody pro uvalení sankcí. Poslední kapitola uvádí aktuálně platné sankce namířené na Afriku a provádí jejich komparaci dle zvolených kritérií.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the comparison of sanction regimes aimed at African countries by the UN and the EU. The theoretical introduction is focused on multilateral sanctions as an international organizations’ foreign policy tool. In the next part, the existing sanction practice of both organizations is presented, including their mutual relations. The most common motives considered by both organizations as legitimate reasons for sanctions imposition are mentioned as well. In the last chapter, the thesis states all existing sanction regimes aimed at Africa and compares them using selected criteria.
