The study of the processes during preparation of carbon aerogels by using thermoanalytical techniques

Abstract:

In this work, the processes during preparation of carbon aerogels / cryogels / xerogels are studied. The prevalent used techniques were the thermoanalytical techniques, namely thermogravimetry analysis coupled with mass spectroscopy, thermomechanical analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry (method of thermoporometry). Moreover, thermogravimetry was used for the kinetics studies. Also some complementary techniques such as gas sorption (N2, CO2), XPS, elemental analysis, FTIR or SEM were used and discussed. The mainly studied area of application was adsorption of pollutants (heavy metal ions and phenol) from the aqueous solutions. The obtained results can be summarized as the answers to the following five questions: 1. What information can be gained by thermal analysis during the study of pyrolysis of organic gels? Information about pyrolytic steps, released gases, the unreacted or excessive amounts of precursors, mechanical changes, kinetics etc. can be gained. 2. How can be thermal analysis used during a study of carbon xerogels prepared by ammonia assisted pyrolysis? Post-pyrolytic measurements in air and inert atmosphere were suggested mainly to reveal the presence of incorporated nitrogen. 3. Can thermal analysis help during the assessment of the ?quality? of the prepared carbon xerogels? Yes, based on the thermoanalytical study of pyrolysis, the most suitable aromatic precursor which was supposed to be condensed with formaldehyde was chosen. 4. Can we obtain some reliable information about the textural parameters of organic and carbon aerogels / cryogels / xerogels by thermal analysis? Yes, the method of thermoporometry was optimised for the application to various organic and carbon aerogels / cryogels / xerogels. 5. Is it possible to predict the sorption properties of carbon xerogels by means of thermal analysis? Yes, but not only by using thermal analysis. Other complementary techniques (esp. XPS and gas sorption) are necessary for a deeper study of the mechanism.

Abstract:

V této práci byly studovány procesy při přípravě uhlíkatých aerogelů / kryogelů / xerogelů. Převládající používanou technikou byly termoanalytické techniky, jmenovitě termogravimetrická analýza v kombinaci s hmotnostní spektroskopií, termomechanická analýza a diferenční skenovací kalorimetrie (metoda termoporometrie). Termogravimetrie byla navíc použita i pro studium kinetiky. Dále byly využity některé "doplňkové" techniky jako sorpce z plynné fáze (N2, CO2), XPS, elementární analýza, FTIR nebo SEM. Hlavní studovanou oblastí aplikace byla adsorpce polutantů (ionty těžkých kovů a fenolu) z vodných roztoků. Získané výsledky lze shrnout jako odpovědi na následujících pět otázek: 1. Jaké informace lze získat pomocí termické analýzy při studiu pyrolýzy organických gelů? Lze získat informace o krocích pyrolýzy, uvolněných plynech, nezreagovaných prekurzorech, změny v rozměrech, nebo kinetice procesů atd. 2. Jak může být termická analýza použita při studiu uhlíkatých xerogelů připravených pyrolýzou v atmosféře amoniaku? Byly navrhnuty způsoby měření vzorků po pyrolýze (ve vzduchu a inertní atmosféře) pro zjištění přítomnosti a začlenění dusíku ve struktuře. 3. Může termická analýza pomoci při posuzování "kvality" připravených uhlíkatých xerogelů? Ano, na základě termoanalytického studia pyrolýzy byl vybrán nejvhodnější aromatický prekurzor pro kondenzační reakci s formaldehydem. 4. Můžeme získat nějaké spolehlivé informace o strukturních parametrech organických a uhlíkatých aerogelů / kryogelů / xerogelů pomocí termické analýzy? Ano, metoda termoporometrie byla optimalizována pro různé organické a uhlíkaté aerogely / kryogely / xerogely. 5. Je možné předvídat sorpční vlastnosti uhlíkatých xerogelů prostřednictvím termické analýzy? Ano, ale ne pouze pomocí termické analýzy. Ostatní doplňkové techniky (zejm. XPS a sorpce z plynné fáze) jsou nezbytné pro hlubší studium mechanismu sorpce.
