Identity formation through making commitments

Abstract:

The main research objective of the study was to to achieve identity description in terms of the strength of commitment and the amount of exploration in different domais of adolescents’ life, as well as description the content aspects of identity during late adolescence and its change (at the age of 17 and 19). The data were collected from May 2008 to March 2011 in the longitudinal project ELSPAC (its fifth and sixth wave). During these two stages were interviewed 17-year-old (N = 526, 256 boys and 270 girls) and 19-year-old adolescents (N = 213, 104 boys, 109 girls). Expressed commitments were assessed with the CzechGIDS. This adopted instrument is based on a semi-structured interview exploring the different domains of life, writing down relevant commitments to whom were pertained 11 questions measured commitments (6) and exploration (5). Based on the criteria for exploration and commitment every respondent was assigned to one type of manifested commitment: non-manifested, partially manifested or manifested. The evaluation criteria for these types of commitments were set before the content analysis of interviews, which was accomplished by two independent evaluators. The results point out the differences and common intersections of the two types of commitment. In our sample the process of identity formation through making commitments was appeared as successful. Comparison between 17- and 19-year-old adolescents showed that the strength of commitment is relatively stable, the amount of exploration significantly increased with age.

Abstract:

Cieľom predkladanej štúdie bola descripcia obsahu identity v jednotlivých oblastiach adolescentného života, popisovaný je výskyt explorácie a záväzkov. Vývinové zmeny sú zachytené v rámci longitudinálneho výskumu a to u sedemnásť a devätnásťročných adolescentov, ktorí sa vyšetrenia zúčastnili opakovane. Zber dát pre túto štúdiu bol realizovaný dlhodobo (od mája 2008 do marca 2011) v rámci longitudinálneho projektu ELSPAC (jeho piatej a šiestej vlny). Počas týchto dvoch etáp sa rozhovoru zúčastnili 17-roční (N = 526, 256 chlapcov a 270 dievčat) a 19-roční adolescenti (N = 213; 104 chlapcov, 109 dievčat). Použitá metodika CzechGIDS pozostáva z pološtruktúrovaného rozhovoru a dotazníka. Cieľom rozhovoru je zistiť, aké si respondenti formulujú záväzky, ktoré po každej oblasti spisujú vo forme výrokov. K nim následne vypĺňajú 11 položkový dotazník, merajúci silu záväzku (5) a množstvo explorácie (6). Tento typ záväzku, ktorý je výsledkom subjektívnych výpovedí je pomenovaný ako respondentom vyjadrený. Druhým typom záväzku je manifestovaný – založený na expertnom hodnotení obsahu rozhovoru podľa vopred stanovených kritérií do troch kategórii (nezáväzok, explorácia alebo čiastočne manifestovaný záväzok, záväzok). Výsledky poukazujú na rozdiel i spoločné prieniky obidvoch záväzkových druhov. V prezentovanom súbore sa ukázal proces formovania identity utváraním záväzkov ako úspešný. Porovnanie medzi 17- a 19-ročnými poukázalo na to, že sila záväzku je pomerne stabilná, explorovanie sa vekom signifikantne zvýšilo.
