Light-dependent magnetoreception in insects

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce je souborem poznatků souvisejících s biologickou recepcí magnetického pole. Popisuje mechanizmy, které by mohly být základem tohoto "šestého smyslu", možné propojení magnetoreceptoru s nervovou soustavou i využití získaných informací. Zaměřuje se na aktuální trendy ve výzkumu magnetorecepce a klade důraz na studium hmyzu, který je v současnosti poněkud ve stínu výzkumu obratlovců, zejména ptáků. V neposlední řadě shrnuje výsledky Laboratoře neuroetologie a smyslové fyziologie hmyzu, které spolu se závěry dalších experimentů naznačují možnost, že magnetorecepce hmyzu je závislá na světle. Význam studia magnetorecepčního smyslu spočívá v objasňování dosud málo prozkoumané smyslové modality i v doplnění obecných biologických a biofyzikálních znalostí.

Abstract:

Submitted work is a summary of findings related to the biological reception of magnetic field. It describes mechanisms that may underly this "sixth sense", possible connection of magnetoreceptor with nervous system, as well as the utilization of gained informations. The work is focused on recent trends in the magnetoreception research pointing out the study of insects which has been slightly in a shadow of vertebrate research, especially of birds. Last but not least it recapitulates the results of Laboratory of neuroethology and the sensory physiology of insects, which according to conclusions of other experiments implies possibility, that magnetoreception in insects is light-dependent. The importance of research on magnetoreception sense consists in clarifying still obscure sensory modality as well as in completing general biological and biophysical knowledge.
