The opera Brundibar by Hans Krasa and its use in the process of music education

Abstract:

Cílem této rigorózní práce je formou podrobné metodické příručky rozpracování možností, jak žáky druhého stupně základních škol a gymnázií seznámit s tématem holocaustu. Prostředkem k tomuto úkolu se stává dětská opera Brundibár židovského skladatele Hanse Krásy. Teoretická část poskytuje přehled historických konsekvencí židovského útlaku v průběhu druhé světové války, podává informace o životě v Terezínském ghettu a kultuře, kterou zde vězni i přes otřesné sociální podmínky rozvíjeli. Zpracovává životopisné údaje skladatele Hanse Krásy a jeho hudební dílo, zejména pak dětskou operu Brundibár. Metodická část shrnuje způsoby, jakými lze vyučovat o holocaustu a snaží se shrnout globální pohled na toto téma. V samostatných kapitolách je pak navržena didaktická aplikace částí opery Brundibár se zohledněním hudební vyspělosti žáků tak, aby se cestou vlastního prožitku mohli s tímto dílem seznámit a zároveň jim bylo umožněno poznat operu jako hudební formu.

Abstract:

This doctoral thesis aims to elaborate possibilities, by means of a detailed methodological manual, upon how to acquaint pupils of secondary schools and grammar schools with the topic of the holocaust. The children opera Brundibár, by Jewish composer Hans Krása, is to serve as the means of this task. The theoretical part offers an overview of the historical consequences of the Jewish oppression in the course of the World War II., informs of the life in Terezín ghetto and culture, which was, in spite of the appalling social conditions, being developed by the prisoners. It compiles the autobiographical data of Hans Krása and his musical work, paricularly the children opera Brundibár. The metodical part summarizes methods of teaching about the holocaust and aims to summarize a global view of this topic. Each chapter deals with a proposed didactic application of parts of the opera Brundibár, with reference to the pupils? musical maturity, so that they can acquaint themselves with the piece of work by the means of personal experience and, at the same time, learn of the opera as a musical form.
