Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá sochařskými díly zobrazujícími domorodé obyvatele Spojených států, která byla vytvořena americkými sochaři ve druhé polovině devatenáctého století, a to prostřednictvím analýzy skupiny soch vystavených v americké sekci Paláce výtvarného umění na Světové kolumbijské výstavě v Chicagu roku 1893. Způsob, jakým přistupovala euroamerická kultura k námětu domorodých obyvatel v umění, je zkoumán nejen v rámci sociálního a kulturního pozadí vztahů mezi Spojenými státy a domorodou populací, ale zejména v rámci soudobého uměleckého školení v Paříži, národní identity a umělecké kritiky tohoto žánru.

Abstract:

The thesis examines sculptural representations of Native Americans created by American sculptors in the second half of the nineteenth century through the analysis of the group of sculptures exhibited in the American exhibition at the Fine Art Palace of the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago (1893). The manner in which the Native American was treated as a subject of art by the Euro-American culture is investigated within the social and cultural background of the relations between the United States and the Native American population as well as the contemporary artistic training in Paris, national identity and critical review of the genre.
