Feminism in Fay Weldon's novel "Female Friends"

Abstract:

This paper analyses the topic of feminism and the way it is displayed in the novel Female Friends by Fay Weldon. The main focus of the thesis is determining whether Weldon manages to achieve the ultimate goals of the second-wave feminism in the world of patriarchal economy, which are self-reliance, independence and economic self-sufficiency. In order to make a clear statement about this issue, firstly, my paper provides theoretical background of feminism. Secondly, review of pertinent literature is employed so that it is understood what is typical of second-wave feminism as far as life of women in this period is concerned. In addition to this, the theoretical part includes information about Fay Weldon and her view on the position of women as well as the solution for their state of unhappiness. After clearly defining mentioned terms, the analytical part follows with analyses of novels' extracts. In light of analytical and theoretical sections, this research paper concludes that not only does Weldon showcase how to achieve the goals of the second-wave feminism, but she also supports and encourages women to change their life. Weldon implies that women's happiness can be achieved via independence, which is overruled and suppressed in patriarchal relationships. Women should no longer depend on a male provider, because they are just as capable of handling responsibilities of a breadwinner and living as a self-reliant member of the society.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce anaylzuje téma feminismu a způsob, jakým je vyobrazen v románu Fay Weldonové Female Friends. Na co se tato práce zejména soustředí je určení, zda Weldon dokázala s touto knihou dosáhnout těch nejzásadnějších cílů žen druhé vlny feminismu, a těmi jsou samostatnost, nezávislost a ekonomická soběstačnost. K tomu, aby byl proveden jednoznačný úsudek o této tézi, budou nejdříve poskytnuty teoretické informace o feminismu. Dále bude posouzena literatura vztahující se k druhé vlně feminismu, aby bylo pochopeno, co je typické pro život žen této doby. Navíc k teoretické části budou dodány informace o Fay Weldonové a její pohled na pozici žen ve společnosti, a to včetně toho, co by ženy měly dělat, aby se vymanily ze stavu neštěstí. Po jasném definování potřebných pojmů a termínů bude následovat analytická část, kde bude provedena analýza extraktů z románu. Vzhledem k teoretické a analytické části, tato bakalářská práce dochází k záveru, že Weldon nejen ukázala ve sve knížce, jak dosáhnout cílů druhé vlny feminismu, ale také Female Friends slouží jako podpora a povzbuzení k tomu, aby ženy svůj život změnily.
