Visual imprint of Zapatista movement in Czech environment and its political possibilities

Abstract:

Práce nahlíží na zapatistické hnutí jako na globální fenomén, jehož otisky je možné nalézt i v České republice. Zasazuje zapatistické hnutí do širšího kontextu aktivistické mobilizace. V tomto směru se snaží navázat na koncepty Alexe Khasnabishe a Neviditelného výboru, kdy zmiňuje pojmy jako rezonance a transnárodní prostor. Mapuje lokální činnosti solidarizující se zapatistickým hnutím. Sleduje, jak se charakter těchto činností měnil v čase společně s identickými rysy jejich aktérů. Za pomoci etnografického přístupu analyzuje tři konkrétní případy vzniklých aktivit v reakci na Zapatismus. Přihlíží na fakt, že otisk zapatistického hnutí je v množství případů vizuální. Je zde kladena větší pozornost na reprezentaci. Na závěr analyzuje grafickou tvorbu českých aktivistů, kteří prezentují zapatisty jako symbol v kontextu jejich vlastních idejí.

Abstract:

This paper aims to view the Zapatista movement as a global phenomenon, which imprints can be also traced in the Czech Republic. The Zapatista movement is placed into the much broader context of activists’ mobilization. Regarding the activist point of view, the concepts of Alex Khasnabish and the collective of authors The Invisible Committee are followed. The terms such as resonance and the transnational space are elaborated on. Along with the mapping of local Zapatista solidarity venues, this thesis overviews the changes in the display of solidarity and its participants over time. With the help of ethnographic approach, it analyses the three distinct cases which emerged from the Zapatista-oriented activities. The fact that the Zapatista imprint is dominated by visual representation is imposed carefully and with the greatest importance. Concluding, the paper analyses the graphical work of Czech artists/activists, who represent the Zapatistas as a symbol of the activists’ own revolutionary ideas.
