Social representations of the ageing proces of women

Abstract:

The presented work is a contribution to the knowledge of social psychology and social gerontology about meanings, which are carried by the aging process of women in our society. The work is rooted in social con-structivism (Gergen, 2001) and use lifespan and life-course perspective (Baltes, 1987, 2005; Satterson, 2007). Dialogical and structural approach of the theory of social representations was used as a tool for increasing sensitivity in exploring the meanings. (Moscovici, 1988; Abric, 1993; Marková, 2007). The aim of this work is to illustrate the ways of creating and disseminating meanings of aging women on the basis of the socio-historic facts and of the qualitative research. The research objective is to capture shared beliefs, values and experiences that women attach to this process by the methods of participating observation, analysis of free associations and semi-structured individual interviews. The research sample was created by members of Brno civic association named "Ženy50", which focuses on the personal development of women after the age of fifty and their involvement in creating a harmonious society. Data analysis was realized by means of the-matic analysis in the case of free associations (Plichtová, 2002) and by use of selected principles of grounded theory in the case of individual interviews (Strauss, Corbin, 1999; Charmaz, 2006).

Abstract:

Predkladaná práca je príspevkom k poznaniu sociálnej psychológie a sociálnej gerontológie o významoch, ktoré nesie proces starnutia žien v našej spoločnosti. Práca je kotvená v sociálnom konštrukcionizme (Gergen, 2001) a využíva lifespan a life-course perspektívu (Baltes, 1987, 2005; Satterson, 2007). Ako senzitivizujúci koncept pre poznávanie týchto významov bol využívaný štrukturálny a dialogický prístup teórie sociálnych reprezentácií (Moscovici, 1988; Abric, 1993; Marková, 2007). Cieľom práce je objasniť spôsoby utvárania a šírenia významov starnutia žien na základe sociohistorických skutočností a realizovaného výskumu. Vý-skumným cieľom je pomocou zúčastneného terénneho pozorovania, analýzy voľných asociácií a analýzy pološtrukturovaných individuálnych rozhovorov zachytiť zdieľané presvedčenia, hodnoty a skúsenosti, ktoré prisudzujú ženy tomuto procesu. Výskumnú vzorku tvorili členky brnenského OZ „Ženy50“, ktoré sa zameriava na osobnostný rozvoj žien vo veku po päťdesiatke a ich zapájanie do vytvárania harmonickej spoločnosti. Analýza dát bola realizovaná prostredníctvom tematickej analýzy v prípade voľných asociácií (Plichtová, 2002) a vybraných princípov zakotvenej teórie v prípade individuálnych rozhovorov (Strauss, Corbin, 1999; Charmaz, 2006).
