False Friends Between English and Czech: A Corpus Study

Abstract:

Diplomová práce zkoumá korpusová data a dokazuje možnost účinnějšího studování známé problematiky falešných přátel s cílem omezit jejich neblahý vliv na slovní zásobu. Jednotlivě se analyzuje deset anglicko-českých slovních párů, přičemž se vytváří a zároveň testují nové postupy a metody pro jejich analýzu. Mnohé z těchto metod jsou osvědčeny jako kvalitní a účinné zdroje informací. Sjednocené vyhodnocení všech zkoumaných párů prokazuje, že je možné identifikovat obecnější tendence. Na jejich základě je předložen návrh na nový postup výzkumu pro další studie.

Abstract:

The thesis conducts a thorough corpus research that affirms the possibility of studying the well-known issue of false friends more effectively, with the primary aim of limiting its influence on the general vocabulary. It studies ten individual English-Czech word pairs, while inventing and testing new methods and approaches that can be used for their analysis. Many of the methods prove to be a compelling and efficient source of information. Assembling the findings of the separate word pairs reveals general tendencies are present. A new approach for further research is thus proposed.
