Mineralogical, Petrographical and Geochemical Study of Sediments and Soils - Critical Evaluation of Efficient Methods for Determination of Their Real Mineralogical Composition

Abstract:

Minerální složení vzorků je jedním z důležitých faktorů, ovlivňující sorpční chování sedimentů. Při výzkumu sorpcí těžkých kovů byly detailně mineralogicky, petrograficky a geochemicky studovány referenční vzorky reálných sedimentů a půd. Cílem této práce bylo stanovit metodiku pro rychlé a efektivní zhodnocení minerálního složení povrchových sedimentů. V případě studií kontaminací a sorpcí je vhodné se zaměřit na bližší studium látek, které se vyšší měrou účastní sorpcí jako sorbenty (jílové minerály, oxyhydroxidy, karbonáty, organická hmota), studium hlavních minerálů (křemene, živců) je zbytečné vzhledem k velmi malé sorpční (výměnné) kapacitě danných minerálů. Jednou z důležitých metod je chemická (silikátová) analýza, která podává dobrou představu o prvkovém zastoupení a tedy je možné předpokládat přítomnost určitých minerálů, na jejichž identifikaci zaměřit detailnější studium. Velmi malé množství určitých oxidů znemožní rychle a efektivně zjistit, ve které minerální fázi jsou obsaženy, proto je výhodnější je přepočítat na normativní minerály. RTG difrakční analýzy celohorninových vzorků poskytují přehled hlavních minerálů. Pro studium sorpcí jsou důležité díky velmi dobré možnosti identifikace jednotlivých karbonátů a přiblížení přítomnosti opálu ve formě jeho složek tridymitu a cristobalitu. Dobrou představu o přítomnosti hlavních minerálů a vztahů mezi jednotlivými složkami poskytuje mikroskopické studium výbrusů. Obsah frakce jílu a RTG difrakční analýza frakce jílu orientovaných preparátů přiblíží především složení a přibližné zastoupení jílových minerálů ve frakci jílu. Kombinace metod difuzně reflexní spektroskopie a voltametrie, snadno dostupná IR analýza poskytnou další dílčí údaje. Pomocí studia elektronovým mikroskopem s EDX analyzátorem je možné přiblížit složení především hlavních minerálů (živců, slíd). Kvantitativní fázová analýza minerálů půd podle Zoubkové, Ondruše a Veselovského (1993) je nevhodná z důvodu dlouhého času separování frakce jílu. Extrakce Fe pouze přiblíží množství celkového Fe (bez rozlišení Fe2+, Fe3+) vázaného v organokomplexech, krystalických a nekrystalických Fe-oxyhydroxidech a silikátech. Pomocí této metody neni možné odlišit různé Fe-oxyhydroxidy (goethit, hematit). Přepočty silikátových analýz, založené na detailním mineralogickém studiu dalšími metodami, jsou blízkým obrazem skutečného minerálního složení. Přepočty v Excelu i pomocí programu MODES vyšly velmi podobně. Pestože byly provedeny přepočty silikátových analýz na základ identifikovaných minerálů, kvantitativní zhodnocení zjištných fází je nevhodné již v závislosti na snížené homogenitě vzorků povrchových sedimentů. Také chemické složení sekundárních minerálů je velmi proměnlivé vzhledem k prostředí a podmínkám vzniku.

Abstract:

Mineral composition is one of the important factors, affecting sorption behaviour of sediment samples. Within the investigation of heavy metal sorptions reference samples of sediments and soils were mineralogically, petrographically and geochemically studied in detail. The methodology for effective estimation of mineralogical composition of surface sediments was determined as the point of this study. Within the research of the contaminations and sorptions, it is necessary to focus on the study of sorbents (clay minerals, oxy-hydroxides, carbonates, and organic matter contents). The characterization of the rock-forming minerals (quartz, feldspars) is unnecessary with respect to their small sorption capacity. The chemical silicate analysis is one of the important methods, which provide the components (oxides) composition of the samples, and based on this it is possible to estimate the presence of important minerals - sorbents. Very small amount of some oxides preclude the effective identification of the mineralogical phases with these oxides. It is better to recalculate these oxides on the normative minerals. The XRD analyses of the bulk rock samples yield the rock-forming minerals identification. The identification of the carbonates and opal phases (tridymite, cristobalite) is important for the sorptions research. The microscopic description of the thin sections is helpful for the investigation of the main minerals and the relations among them. The clay fraction determination and the XRD analyses of the oriented samples of the separated clay fraction are necessary for the clay minerals identification and their approximated content evaluation. The combination of the diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and the voltametric method, both for the detection of the Fe minerals, the infra-red spectroscopy, and the investigations using the scanning electron microscope with EDX analyser provide partial information about sample under study. Quantitative analysis of the mineral compisition according Zoubková, Ondruš and Veselovský (1993) is not suitable for samples with clay fraction content higher then 1 weight % in case of long time separation of the clay fraction. The extraction of the Fe give only approximate Fe content in the organo-complexes, crystalline and non-crystalline Fe oxy-hydroxides and silicates, without distinction of the Fe2+, Fe3+, and without identification of the Fe-minerals. Silicate analyses were recalculated to real and normative minerals according to the detailed mineralogical study by other methods. The recalculations made in spreadsheet calculator Excel and with computer code MODES are very similar. Although the silicate analyses recalculation was based on the mineralogical composition found, the quantitative estimation of the minerals in sediments is not suitable, because sediments, especially soils, are inhomogeneous. Also the chemical composition of the secondary minerals (important sorbents) is very variable, depending on the environment and conditions of the origin.
