Tracing the Impact of the Cultural Revolution on Women in Chinese Society Based on Comparative Analysis of Chosen Memoirs

Anotácia:

Tato bakalářská práce zkoumá zkušenosti čínských žen z doby Kulturní revoluce (1966-1976) na základě komparativní analýzy tří vybraných memoárů (Divoké labutě od Jung Chang, Peříčko v bouři od Emily Wu a Spider Eaters od Rae Yang). Práce se zaměřuje na narativní aspekty těchto memoárů, na to, jak Kulturní revoluce autorky ovlivnila a jak jednotlivé události změnily jejich životy. K zodpovězení hlavních výzkumných otázek bylo třeba brát v úvahu změny v jejich sociálním i osobním životě, jejich myšlenky a trápení. Práce analyzuje to, jakým způsobem si autorky události a zkušenosti pamatují a jakým způsobem svůj příběh podávají a následně porovnává jednotlivé situace a pocity, které autorky v knihách zmiňují. Kromě samotné analýzy se práce také zaměřuje na problematiku vztahu historie a paměti, situaci žen během Kulturní revoluce a celkové historické pozadí této doby. Události, které vzešly z Kulturní revoluce ovlivnily jejich kolektivní i individuální paměť, způsob, kterým na období vzpomínají či zapomínají a také jejích osobní život. Kulturní revoluce jako taková je komplex událostí, který ovlivnil životy mnoha lidi odlišnými způsoby na základě jejich společenského postavení a rodinného prostředí. I přesto, že někteří za této doby těžili, většina však trpěla a žila pod neustálým tlakem. Život čínských žen se za Kulturní revoluce relativně změnil. Změnil se pohled společnosti i to jakým způsobem vnímaly samy sebe. Negativní změny, které revoluce přinesla, přišly v podobě kampaní, reforem, přísných omezení a způsobily mnoho utrpení, ovlivnily jejich paměť a smýšlení.

Abstract:

My bachelor thesis examines the situation of Chinese women during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), within the methodological framework of a comparative and narrative analysis of the changing face of women in Chinese society based on three selected memoirs. My thesis deals with the narrative aspects of these memoirs, how the protagonists were affected, and how specific events resulting from the Cultural Revolution have changed their personal lives. It considers the changes of social, personal and mental processes, which the protagonists in the chosen memoirs live and go through to make daily life meaningful. My study analyses how the authors remember and write about their past, comparing each one of the women's experiences as well as addressing the issue of the relationship between their memory and the historical background. My thesis is based upon three memoirs that describe their personal stories and experience in detail. The experience and relentless torrent of events have impacted their collective memory, the way they gather memories through the experience they have been through and how they recall and forget events, places and people. The Culture Revolution the women have experienced was a complex of events that has affected each one of them differently based on their social status. Some benefited from it and some suffered from the very beginning and became victims. The Chinese women's status and the way they saw themselves has relatively changed after the onset of the Cultural Revolution that has launched in the manner of destroying old traditions and customs. The negative changes brought a lot of distress and hardship, impacted their memory and the way of thinking. These changes came mainly due to the amount of campaign, reforms, drastic restrictions, a downgrade of people's standard of living and acts of violence.
