Dlouhá období sucha a nerovnoměrnost srážek jsou častými jevy v 21. století, které spolu s hospodařením se smrkem ztepilým (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) mimo jeho přirozený areál v Evropě vedly k fyziologickému slábnutí a odumírání celých smrkových porostů.
