Abstract:

Práce má za cíl oživit zájem o preromantického básníka Thomase Chattertona, který je převážně označován za pouhého padělatele. Komplexně představuje tohoto autora čtenáři bez hlubokých znalostí období romantismu a obhajuje Chattertona jako jednoho z nejvlivnějších autorů své doby. Práce si dává za úkol dokázat, že Chattertonův odkaz nejenže pomohl při vytváření celé romantické epochy a ovlivnil řadu z jejích předních představitelů, ale i že jeho vliv přesahoval k o sto let mladším autorům. Předkládá přehled o Chattertonově životě, jeho písemné tvorbě a o jeho předčasné smrti, která hrála významnou roli v náhlém vzestupu jeho posmrtné slávy. Závěr je pak věnován rozboru konceptu kánonu západní literatury, jak byl popsán význačnými intelektuály dvacátého století, obzvláště pak Haroldem Bloomem a Frankem Kermodem. Zahrnuto je i uplatnění těchto hodnot na Chattertonovo dílo, současně se zvážením všech aktuálních akademických i neakademických pokusů o vzkříšení jeho jména do podvědomí běžného čtenáře. Práce chce tak podpořit tato úsilí a přispět ke znovuzařazení Thomase Chattertona mezi největší osobnosti romantismu.

Abstract:

The thesis attempts to rejuvenate the interest in the pre-Romantic poet Thomas Chatterton, who is most commonly described as a mere forger. It introduces the author in a comprehensive fashion to a reader without any strong knowledge of him or the period. It defends Chatterton as being one of the most influential and canonical authors of his age. The paper attempts to prove that Chatterton’s legacy not only helped shaping the entire epoch and influenced its most famous representatives, but that he also affected authors a century younger. It presents a concise view of Chatterton’s life, writing career, and, ultimately, premature death, that played a vital role in the upsurge of his posthumous fame. Lastly, the paper focuses on deconstructing the concept of the Western literary canon as described by prominent intellectuals of the twentieth century, especially Harold Bloom and Frank Kermode. It then suggests the applicability of thus defined values to Chatterton’s works, while considering the recent academic and generic attempts that have contributed to the poet’s resurrection in the consciousness of the general readership. The thesis aims to contribute to such endeavours and help reinstating Thomas Chatterton among the greatest names of Romanticism.
