Analysis of specific translations of Milena Tomášková and Luděk Kárl from point of view of polysystem theory

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the work of two Czech translators – Milena Tomaskova and Ludek Karl – and examines their translations from French from the 1950s and 1960s. The aim of this thesis is to analyze one piece of translation from the 1950s and one from the 1960s from each translator. We will observe the translation strategy applied in each work and establish which translation processes prevail. In order to determine the translation strategy with maximum accuracy, we shall assess the frequency of specific translation processes in each piece of translation by means of statistics and subsequently compare the numeric results. We will base our analysis of these results on the Polysystem theory, which concerns itself with translation norms and thus describes different factors that can influence the final shape of the translation. Through this theory we shall endeavour to explain the reasons behind the differences in the examined translations.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se věnuje vybraným překladům dvou českých překladatelů – Mileny Tomáškové a Luďka Kárla. Jedná se o překlady z francouzštiny z padesátých a šedesátých let. Cílem práce je analyzovat od každého překladatele jeden překlad z padesátých let a jeden překlad z let šedesátých. Budeme sledovat, jaká je u každého díla uplatněna překladatelská strategie a které překladatelské procesy převládají. Abychom určili co nejpřesněji, o jakou strategii se jedná, vyhodnotíme v každém díle počet jednotlivých překladatelských procesů a následně tyto číselné výsledky statisticky vyhodnotíme. Při vyhodnocování se opřeme o teorii polysystému, která se zabývá překladatelskými normami a pojednává tak o různých vlivech, které mohou určit podobu překladu. Pomocí této teorie se pokusíme objasnit a vysvětlit, proč se jednotlivé překlady liší.
