Comparison of the development of pupils' conceptions about geometric concepts in the course elementary schools from the Czech Republic and Swedish schools

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je popsat představy o geometrických pojmech, konktrétně čtverci, obdélníku a trojúhelníku, u žáků čtvrtého, šestého a osmého ročníku jedné švédské základní školy. Výsledky jsou následně porovnány s dříve provedeným a uveřejněným výzkumem na českých školách. Teoretická část je zaměřena na teorii výuky výše zmíněných rovinných obrazců v obou zemí. Zmiňuje jak národní kurikulární dokumenty i učebnice používané v obou zemích. Následně jsou z učebnic porovnány definice čtverce, obdélníku a trojúhelníku a také navazující úlohy. Srovnání následně slouží k odhalování původu rozdílných výsledků z testu podaného v rámci výzkumu. Je uvedena van Hieleho teorie vývoje geometrického myšlení a dříve provedené výzkumy, které se zabývají rozvojem představ o geometrických pojmech. (např. Budínová, 2021) V praktické části je uvedena metodologie výzkumné sondy a analýza výsledků švédských žáků. Z ní vyplývají některé zajímavé závěry, týkající se například jiného způsobu zavádění pojmů v jednotlivých zemích. Problematické úlohy pro české žáky jako například rotovaný čtverec nedělali švédským žákům obtíž, oproti tomu například útvar připomínající čtverec, který má zaoblené strany dělal problémy švédským žákům. Rozvedená je v práci i debata o trojúhelníku a jeho definici.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to describe the ideas of geometric concepts, namely square, rectangle and triangle, among fourth, sixth and eighth grade pupils in a Swedish primary school. The results are then compared with previously conducted and published research in Czech schools. The theoretical part focuses on the theory of teaching the above-mentioned plane figures in both countries. It mentions both national curriculum documents and textbooks used in both countries. Subsequently, the definitions of square, rectangle and triangle from the textbooks are compared, as well as related exercises. The comparisons are then used to reveal the origin of the different results from the tests administered in the research. Van Hiele's theory of the development of geometric thinking is presented, as well as previous research that addresses the development of ideas about geometric concepts (e.g., Budinova, 2021). In the practical part, the methodology of the research and the analysis of the results of the Swedish pupils are presented. It draws some interesting conclusions, concerning, for example, different ways of introducing concepts in different countries. Problematic problems for Czech pupils, such as a rotated square, did not cause difficulties for Swedish pupils, whereas, for example, a shape resembling a square with rounded sides caused problems for Swedish pupils. The discussion of the triangle and its definition is also discussed in the paper.
