Measure of cognitive complexity via the revised Semantic Selection Test

Abstract:

Cílem práce je zjistit, zda je Test sémantického výběru (TSV) schopen měřit kognitivní komplexitu. Předpokládám, že Test sémantického výběru vyhovuje principům psychologie osobních konstruktů. Na kognitivní komplexitu je nahlíženo jako na dvě nezávislé dimenze: diferenciaci a integraci. Byla navržena dvě měření kognitivní komplexity, která byla následně porovnána s měřeními odvozenými z Testu repertoáru rolových konstruktů (Rep test). Mezi měřeními u obou testů nebyl nalezen vztah, zatímco hypotézy o jednotlivých měřeních u Rep testu se potvrdily. Diferenciace a integrace u TSV byly na sobě závislé, ad hoc proto byly navrženy další indexy a do výzkumu přibrány další proměnné: počet elementů a počet atributů. V nové podobě nebyly již diferenciace a integrace na sobě závislé, ale stále nekorelovaly s měřeními u Rep testu. Některé z indexů u TSV korelovaly s počtem elementů a počtem atributů. Mezi měřeními kognitivní komplexity u Rep testu a u TSV nebyl zjištěn vztah. Je ovšem možné, že TSV se svou podobou od Rep testu natolik liší, že měří jiný druh konstruktů – neverbální konstrukty. Je nutná další práce s touto metodou. Podávám proto přehled možných nedostatků práce a zároveň doporučení pro další výzkum v této oblasti.

Abstract:

The goal of this thesis is to assess whether the Semantic Selection Test is able to measure cognitive complexity. I suppose that the Semantic Selection Test in its essence agrees with the principles of the personal construct psychology. The cognitive complexity is viewed as a two-component process: differentiation and integration. Two measures of cognitive complexity were proposed and then compared with measures of cognitive complexity via The Role Construct Repertory Test (the Rep Test). The measures via the Semantic Selection Test and the Rep test were found uncorrelated, while hypothesis about measures via Rep test were confirmed. Differentiation and integration were dependent reciprocally. For that reason other measures of cognitive complexity via the Semantic Selection Test were ad hoc proposed and two variables were added into the study: number of elements and number of attributes. New measures of cognitive complexity were found independent on each other but still uncorrelated with the measures via the Rep test. Some of the measures via the Semantic Selection Test were correlated with number of elements and number of attributes. The measures of cognitive complexity via the Semantic Selection Test and via the Rep Test were found uncorrelated. It is possible that the Semantic Selection Test in its essence differs from the Rep Test and measures other kind of constructs – nonverbal constructs. Additional work with the Semantic Selection Test is necessary. The thesis ends with an overview of possible insufficiencies and some suggestions for future research.
