Bacteriophage receptor binding proteins

Abstract:

Bakteriofágy jako nejrozšířenější biologické entity na Zemi, hrají klíčovou úlohu ve fungování mnoha ekosystémů. Nabízejí, díky své rozmanitosti, velkou a stále málo prozkoumanou oblast pro vědecké bádání a s ním také příslib mnoha potenciálních využití. Nejen pro účely léčby bakteriálních onemocnění, ale také pro další účely, například pro diagnostiku, je zásadní jejich schopnost selektivní vazby na hostitelskou buňku, kterou jim umožňují specializované receptor-vazebné proteiny. Shrnutí známých poznatků o těchto proteinech a jejich představení v kontextu adsorpce bakteriofágů k hostitelským buňkám a jejich vzájemnému vztahu obecně, stejně jako nastínění možných přínosů těchto znalostí pro člověka je náplní této práce. V práci jsou dále zmíněny některé problémy, se kterými se současné studium popsaných oblastí potýká a možné návrhy, které by mohly směřovat k jejich řešení.

Abstract:

Bacteriophages as the most abundant biological entities on planet Earth play a key role in functioning of many ecosystems. Thanks to their diversity they offer a large and still just a little explored area for scientific research. Hand in hand with it comes the great promise of many potential applications of what we discover. Not only for the treatment of bacterial diseases, but also for other purposes as for example diagnostics their ability to selectively bin dis essential. That is only possible because of specialized receptor-binding proteins. At least a partial summary of our current knowledge about these proteins and their presentation in the context of adsorption of bacteriophages to the host cells, their relationship in general, as well as outlining the possible benefits of this knowledge for humans is the content of this work. Also, some problems that, in the opinion of the author, the current studies of the described areas faces are mentioned together with suggestions that could alleviate them.
