Existentialism in "Querelle de Brest" by Jean Genet

Abstract:

Jean-Paul Sartre was a French philosopher and the most significant representative of the atheistic branch of existentialism.Within this philosophical movement, he was especially concerned with the human morality. He profoundly admired the literary works of his contemporary Jean Genet, a thief and, later on, a writer. Sartre even wrote an extensive Genet’s biography called „Saint Genet“, where he, besides other things, labeled Genet as an existentialist writer. However, Genet’s conception of morality and his conception of the fundamental point clearly defy those that match Sartre’s. Thus a question arises, whether it is possible to consider Genet a writer with existentialist views, and if it is, then in what ways his conception of existentialism differs from the Genet’s.

Abstract:

Jean-Paul Sartre byl francouzský filosof a nejvýznamnější představitel ateistického existencialismu. V rámci tohoto filosofického směru se zabýval především morálkou člověka. Hluboce obdivoval literární tvorbu svého současníka, zloděje a později spisovatele Jeana Geneta. Dokonce o něm napsal rozsáhlou biografii Saint Genet, kde jej mimo jiné označuje za existencialistického spisovatele. Genetovo pojetí morálky se ovšem, stejně tak jako pojetí dalších hlavních bodů existencialismu, se Sartrem na první pohled vylučuje. Vyvstává tedy otázka, zda je možné považovat Geneta za spisovatele s existencialistickým smýšlením a když ano, v čem se Genetovo pojetí existencialismu liší od pojetí Sartrova.
