Liquidity of banks in the Visegrad Group

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se soustředí na vývoj likvidity bank zemí Visegrádské skupiny pro období 2013-2018. Předešlá finanční krize rozkryla slabá místa v řízení likvidní pozice bank a od té doby nastalo mnoho změn v dané oblasti, čímž banky musí na nová opatření reagovat. Přínosem této práce je nabídnout zhodnocení vývoje likvidity v zemích V4 a zhodnocení struktury rozvah bank s motivem porozumět, jak byly jednotlivé země dotčeny regulatorními opatřeními. Za pomocí odborné literatury je nastíněna charakteristika bankovní likvidity, v niž dále jsou vymezena možná rizika likvidity, charakterizovány metody používané pro měření rizika likvidity a řízení likvidity. Následně není opomenuto shrnutí platných regulatorních požadavků včetně přiblížení konceptu Basel III, který stanovuje globální standardy likvidity. V praktické části práce se poměrové ukazatele aplikují na jednotlivé sektory zemí. Je zjištěno, že změny v rozvahách bank a vyšší likvidita lze alespoň částečně vysvětlit novými regulatorními požadavky v oblasti likvidity.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis examines the advances in bank’s liquidity in the Visegrad Group countries during 2013-2018. Researchers no longer argue about the fact that the 2008 financial crisis exposed weaknesses in the management of bank’s liquidity positions. Therefore, various measures in the regulatory framework have been proposed in the literature since then, which required banks to respond to such measures. The contribution of this thesis is twofold: (i) an evaluation on the development of bank liquidity in V4 countries is offered; (ii) structure of banks’ balance sheets is presented to understand the extent to which individual countries were affected by regulatory measures. On the basis of the available literature, the characteristics of bank liquidity are defined. Possible liquidity risks, in conjunction with methods for measuring such risks, are also discussed. A comprehensive summary of applicable regulatory requirements is provided in the theoretical framework of this thesis. The concept of Basel III, which sets the global liquidity standards, is also discussed. In the empirical section, ratio indicators are applied to the individual sectors of the respective countries. Our findings show that the differences in banks’ balance sheets can be partly explained by new regulatory framework.
