The transition from operetta to musical in dramaturgy of Ivo Osolsobě in the era of 1960s

Abstract:

The aim of my Magister diploma thesis is to map the impact of Ivo Osolsobě in the position of a dramaturgist at the State Theatre in Brno. For the purposes of this thesis I selected the era of 1960s because at that time the Musical Scene of State Theatre in Brno moved from the genre of operetta to the genre of musical, which was the result of Osolsobě's management. In the main body of this thesis I deal with his dramaturgical work but before it starts there are several chapters which introduce the personality of professor Osolsobě as a person who loved theatre. The chapters consist of a description of the situation since his provisory acceptance in 1953 until his actual entering the position of the musical scene dramaturgist at the beginning of 1959. This is followed by the aforementioned descriptions of the dramaturgy, highlighting the transition from operetta to musical. I am trying to demonstrate that the dramaturgy of Ivo Osolsobě is so elaborated and full of various titles that it encourages others to do similar activities. I conclude this part with the premiere of "West Side Story" which was a significant milestone in the dramaturgy of Ivo Osolsobě as well as a natural transition from 1960 to 1970 in the dramaturgy of the State Theatre in Brno. This extensive chapter is followed by several shorter chapters which deal with the political and social context of the period, theoretical management of Ivo Osolsobě in the programmes for inscenations and the PROGRAM magazines. Finally, the readers will be able to find out which authors the dramaturgy re-introduced, with whom it closely cooperated and what created the dramaturgy with added value. Professor Osolsobě was an extraordinary person, dramaturgist and theorist. Most of the theory in this text is based on his work. I believe he was one of the theorists of this region who handled everything he wrote in an excellent way.

Cieľom mojej magisterskej diplomovej práce je zmapovať pôsobenie Iva Osolsobě v pozícii dramaturga pre Štátne divadlo v Brne. Toto obdobie som vymedzila na šesťdesiate roky 20. storočia, pretože v tom čase prebiehal v Spevohre Štátneho divadla v Brne prechod od žánru opereta, k žánru muzikál, o ktorý sa postaral on sám. Hlavná časť mojej diplomovej práce sa opiera o samotnú dramaturgickú prácu profesora Osolsobě. No ešte pred tým uvádzam kapitoly, ktoré čitateľovi pozvoľna približujú osobu pána profesora ako človeka, ktorý divadlo miloval. Stručne popíšem situáciu od jeho provizórneho prijatia v 53. roku, po reálny nástup do pozície dramaturga spevohry na začiatku roku 1959. Nasleduje spomínaný rozbor dramaturgie, kde poukazujem na žánrový prechod od operety k muzikálu. Pokúšam sa ukázať, že dramaturgia Iva Osolsobě je tak premyslená a plná rôznorodých titulov, že podnecuje k podobnej činnosti. Stať ukončujem premiérou "West Side Story", pretože znamenala významný medzník v dramaturgii Iva Osolsobě. Taktiež znamenala prirodzený predel medzi šesťdesiatymi a sedemdesiatymi rokmi v dramaturgii Štátneho divadla v Brne. Po tejto rozsiahlej kapitole nasledujú kratšie kapitoly, ktoré spracovávajú politický a spoločenský dobový kontext, teoretické vedenie Iva Osolsobě v programoch k inscenáciám a časopisoch PROGRAM a na záver si bude môcť čitateľ prečítať, k akým autorom sa dramaturgia navracala, s kým si vytvorila úzku spoluprácu a čo tvorilo dramaturgiu s pridanou hodnotou. Pán profesor Osolsobě bol obdivuhodný človek, dramaturg, teoretik. Väčšina mojich stretov s teóriou v tomto texte sa opiera práve o jeho prácu. Domnievam sa, že on bol v našich končinách teoretikom, ktorý všetko čo napísal, zvládol na výbornú.
