P.R.B.: Painting as a Scandal

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá výkladem skandálních aspektů raných obrazů Prerafaelského bratrstva. Charakterizuje místo a dobu, viktoriánskou Anglii a Londýn v polovině 19. století. Pozornost věnuje také Královské akademii a uměleckému prostředí. Obsahuje základní údaje o prerafaelismu, krátké biografie zakládajících členů P.R.B. a formální popis jejich prvých dvou děl vytvořených na základě prerafaelských principů. Zabývá se dobovými ohlasy těchto uměleckých prací s důrazem na obraz známý pod názvem Kristus v domě svých rodičů (Christ in the House of His Parents) nebo také Tesařská dílna (The Carpenter's Shop) a jejich analýzou. Cílem je nalezení společných charakteristických rysů vyplývajících z dobových komentářů. Původní prameny chápe jako nezbytné pro studium uměleckého díla a to vzhledem k poskytnutí primárních informací nezkreslených a nezatížených interpretacemi jiných autorů. V závěru vyhodnocuje dobovou kritiku a „skandální“ ohlas prerafaelských obrazů.

Abstract:

This bachelors thesis deals with scandalous aspects of early paintings of Pre-Raphael's Brotherhood. It describes the location and period of Victorians England and London in the middle of the 19. century and notices the Royal Academy and contenporary world of art as well. This thesis contains basic data about preraphaelism, brief biography of establishing P.R.B. members and formal description of their first two paintings which were made according to preraphaelism principes. It deals with historical responses on painting known as Christ in the House of His Parents or The Carpenter's Shop and their analysis. Contemporary critics are not involved. The aim of this thesis is to identify characteristic features of period comments and to find out, what do they have in common. The origin sources of information are considered to be crucial for studying this masterpiece becouse of its authentic interpretations without any distortions provided by another authors. Finally it evaluates historical reviews and „scandalous” responses to preraphaelistic paintings.
