The Influence of Participation in the Activities of Roman Catholic Church on the Body Image of Church Members

Abstract:

Tělesné sebepojetí se utváří a proměňuje v závislosti na sociálním prostředí jedince. Římskokatolická církev hlásá rozdílné hodnoty v tělesném pojetí, než je současný tělesný ideál předkládaný společností: věřící člověk má respektovat své tělo jako dar Boží, přijímat ho takové, jaké je, a příliš se nezabývat tělesným vzhledem. Aktivní zapojení věřícího v rámci římskokatolické církve může mít vliv na jeho tělesné sebepojetí, což bylo ověřováno na vzorku sto padesáti osob. Přestože rozdíly ve výsledcích dotazníku týkajícího se sebepojetí mezi skupinou bez vyznání a skupinou příslušníků římskokatolické církve nebyly na pěti procentní hladině významnosti, byla v tomto výzkumu prokázána korelace mezi mírou zapojení věřícího do aktivit církve a pozitivního vztahu k tělu spolu s pozitivním hodnocením těla.

Abstract:

An individual’s body image is formed and influenced by the individual’s social environment. There is a significant difference in values ascribed to body image by the Roman Catholic Church and the body image values prevailing in the social majority: A believer is encouraged to respect their body as a gift of God, to accept it as it is, and not to invest much effort into their physical appearance. A study conducted on the sample of 150 people was to show the validity of the hypothesis that an active participation of a believer in the activities of the Catholic Church can influence their body image. Although the differences between the group of believers and the control group of non-believers did not exceed the five per cent borderline of statistical significance, the study did prove the existence of correlations between the degree of participation in church activities, a positive attitude to an individual’s body and a positive evaluation of their body.
